Downtown Hardwick Village Historic District
The Downtown Hardwick Village Historic District encompasses a significant portion of the downtown area of Hardwick, Vermont. The town developed in the 19th century first as a small industrial center, and later became one of the world's leading processors of granite. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Description and history The town of Hardwick was first settled in 1781, but a town government was not established in 1794. The village now called Hardwick was established in 1795, when John Bridgman established a sawmill and gristmill on the Lamoille River. It was originally called South Hardwick, but as it rose in economic importance in the 19th century, it was renamed to just Hardwick. Granite was quarried from the hills surrounding the village beginning 1845, and by 1911 it was home to the largest granite-processing business in the world, the Woodbury Granite Company. Hardwick, Vermont
Hardwick is a town in Caledonia County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,920 at the 2020 census. It contains the unincorporated villages of Hardwick, East Hardwick, and Mackville. The town is a commercial center for the region's farming population. The main settlement of Hardwick in the center of the town, formerly an incorporated village, is since 1988 a census-designated place (CDP), with a population of 1,269 at the 2020 census. History During the Revolutionary War, General George Washington ordered construction of the Bayley-Hazen Military Road to provide access into the interior of Vermont. It would prompt the development and settlement of Hardwick and East Hardwick. The town was granted by the Vermont General Assembly on November 7, 1780, then chartered on August 19, 1781, to Danforth Keyes and 66 others, some of whom were from Hardwick, Massachusetts. Lamoille River
The Lamoille River is a river which runs through northern Vermont and drains into Lake Champlain. It is about in length, and has a drainage area of around . The river generally flows southwest, and then northwest, from the water divide of the Green Mountains. It is the namesake of Lamoille County, Vermont, through which it flows. The river was the basis of the name of the now-defunct Lamoille Valley Railroad Company, successor to the St. Johnsbury and Lamoille County Railroad. Legend has it that early French settlers named the river ''La Mouette,'' meaning "The Seagull". However, a cartographer forgot to cross the t's, which led people to begin calling it ''La Moulle''. Over time, this became ''Lamoille,'' elided in speaking.
