Downriver League
The Downriver League is an athletic conference for high schools in Michigan. It was formed in 2009 after the dissolution of the Michigan Mega Conference by schools in the "Downriver" area of Metro Detroit. In 2018, Edsel Ford High School, Dearborn Edsel Ford was brought into the league to the fill the opening left by John F. Kennedy High School (Taylor, Michigan), Taylor Kennedy after it closed and consolidated with Harry S. Truman High School (Taylor, Michigan), Taylor Truman to make Taylor High. In 2019, Melvindale left to join the Western Wayne Athletic Conference. Michigan Mega Conference
The Michigan Mega Conference was a large high school athletic league comprising twenty-eight schools which disbanded in mid-2009, with its former members either becoming independent or forming their own leagues. Member schools were predominantly located in suburban Wayne County, Michigan, mainly in Downriver. The other schools were located in neighboring Monroe and Washtenaw Counties. The schools were also members of the Michigan High School Athletic Association and compete in the organization's post-season state championships. Depending on the sport, the schools were divided into three or four divisions. Controversies When the MEGA conference was formed in 1993, many schools were denied entry into the conference. The repudiated schools alleged that this was because of their large black student population, the founding schools "discriminated in the formation and operation of the league." Melvindale High School
Melvindale High School is a public school located in Allen Park, Michigan, which is in the Downriver area. This school is offered to students that are in grades 9-12. It is within the Melvindale-Northern Allen Park School District and it also serves northern portions of Allen Park. History Melvindale High School was first built as a one-room school house in 1882. In 1923, the second room for this school house was added on. Since the population of the surrounding area grew, many bonds were granted to the district and Quandt School (MHS's former name) was finally established by 1927. Now, there are four schools within the district: Melvindale High School (9-12), Strong Middle School (6-8), Allendale Elementary (2-5), and Rogers Early Elementary (K-1). Wyandotte ( ) is a city in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 25,058 at the 2020 census. Wyandotte is located in southeastern Michigan, approximately south of Detroit on the Detroit River, and it is part of the collection of communities known as Downriver. Theodore Roosevelt High School (Wyandotte)
Theodore Roosevelt High School, also known as RHS or Roosevelt, or also Wyandotte High by alumni, is the secondary school serving Wyandotte, Michigan, located on Eureka Road several blocks west of Biddle Avenue. The corner stone of Roosevelt High School was laid in the Fall of 1921. Roosevelt did not open its doors to students until April 1923. RHS is the only public high school in the city of Wyandotte. Its mascot is the Bear, with athletic teams with similar names (the Bears for males and the Lady Bears for females). Brownstown Charter Township, Michigan
Brownstown Charter Township is a charter township in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 30,627 at the 2010 census. Brownstown was established in 1827, a decade prior to Michigan's Admission to the Union. Brownstown has three separate but connected segments; due to the incorporation of the cities of Flat Rock, Rockwood, and Woodhaven in the early 1960s. Trenton, Michigan
Trenton is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. At the 2010 census, the city population was 18,853. A Shawnee village was built in the area by war chief Blue Jacket after the 1795 Treaty of Greenville. The area later became the site of the Battle of Monguagon between Americans and a British-Indian coalition during the War of 1812. The battle is commemorated with a Michigan State Historical Site marker in present-day Elizabeth Park, which was the first county park in Michigan when it was established in 1919. Taylor High School (Michigan)
Taylor High School is a senior high school in Taylor, Michigan. It is in the Taylor School District. The name is a reference to the city where it is located. History The school was created in 2018 as a merger of two previous schools, Kennedy High School and Truman High School. A new mascot and school colours were chosen as a compromise between the two previous school identities. The district used the former Truman building since it was newer, had a bigger capacity, and was in a better condition. It was started in 1973 as a joint Senior School and Middle School. Southgate, Michigan
Southgate is a city in Wayne County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 30,047 at the 2020 census. Southgate was incorporated as a city in October 1958, which was one of the last remaining portions of the now-defunct Ecorse Township. It is part of the Downriver collection of communities south of the city of Detroit. History Pierre Michel Campau was the first white settler in Southgate. He moved into the area in 1795, which subsequently became a farming community. Other people from the Detroit area at the Rouge and Detroit Rivers followed him to Southgate.
