Johnny Haddon Downes
John Haddon Downes DFC (26 June 1920 – 28 December 2004) was an English Royal Air Force officer and television producer. Born in Great Easton, Leicestershire, Downes attended The King's School, Grantham. After training as a surveyor, he joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve on the outbreak of the Second World War. He was commissioned in October 1941. He became a flight lieutenant navigator in de Havilland Mosquito night fighters of No 604 Squadron, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944. Following the war, he took up a career in theatre as stage manager for Ivor Novello's ''King's Rhapsody'', later working as a circus producer and ringmaster. Geoff Downes
Geoffrey Downes (born 25 August 1952) is an English keyboardist who gained fame as a member of the new wave group The Buggles with Trevor Horn, the progressive rock band Yes, and the supergroup Asia. Born in Stockport, Downes moved to London to pursue a music career. In 1977, he formed The Buggles with Horn and enjoyed success with their first album ''The Age of Plastic'' (1980) which included the worldwide hit single "Video Killed the Radio Star". In May 1980, Downes joined Yes with Horn and recorded ''Drama'' (1980). After Yes disbanded in 1981, Downes helped Trevor Horn to produce a second Buggles album, ''Adventures in Modern Recording'' (1981) although he was only primarily involved for half of it, and co-founded Asia with ex-Yes fellow musician Steve Howe. Garry Keith Downes (born 7 January 1944) is a former judge of the Federal Court of Australia and former President of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. Education Downes attended Newington College (1956-1960) and graduated from the University of Sydney Law School in 1967. Frederick William Arthur Downes (6 March 1855 – 3 December 1917) was an Australian politician. He was born at Greystanes to farmer Jeremiah Frederick Downes and Sarah Ann Kirk. Having moved to Camden with his family at the age of four, he attended Macquarie Fields School and the King's School in Parramatta before becoming a bank clerk. He was later a wheat and dairy farmer in the Camden area, becoming active in the local farmers' union. He married Caroline Frances May on 14 April 1883 at Wivenhoe. Flynn Downes (born 20 January 1999) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Premier League club West Ham United. Edward Downes
Sir Edward Thomas ("Ted") Downes, CBE (17 June 1924 – 10 July 2009) was an English conductor, specialising in opera. He was associated with the Royal Opera House from 1952, and with Opera Australia from 1970. He was also well known for his long working relationship with the BBC Philharmonic and for working with the Netherlands Radio Orchestra. Within the field of opera, he was particularly known as a conductor of Verdi. He and his wife, Lady (Joan) Downes, committed assisted suicide at the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland on 10 July 2009, an event that received significant media coverage.
