Downers Grove Main Street Station
Downers Grove Main Street (also known as Downers Grove or Main Street) is one of three railroad stations on Metra's BNSF Line in Downers Grove, Illinois. The station is at Main Street, from Union Station, the east end of the line. As of 2018, Downers Grove Main Street is the sixth busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 2,492 weekday boardings. The local police department and library are nearby. Parking lots are managed by the Village of Downers Grove. The station has connections to multiple Pace Buses, including the Commuter Shuttle lines. This station was the site of the 1947 Zephyr train wreck that killed 3 and injured more than 30. The station went under a $1.1 million platform replacement project, which finished in the summer of 2015. Many trains on the BNSF run express to or from Downers Grove. Downers Grove is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1832 by Pierce Downer, whose surname serves as the eponym for the village. It is a south-west suburb of Chicago. The village is located between I-88 and I-55. History Downers Grove was founded in 1832 by Pierce Downer, a farmer who traveled to Illinois from Rutland, New York, but was originally from Vermont. Its other early settlers included the Blodgett, Curtiss, Blanchard, Stanley, Lyman, and Carpenter families. Chicago Subdivision
The Chicago Subdivision or Chicago Sub is a railroad line in Illinois that runs about from Chicago to Aurora and hosts Metra's BNSF Railway Line commuter service. It is operated by BNSF Railway as the easternmost part of the railroad's Northern Transcon to Seattle, Washington. This line is known as the Racetrack because it is mostly triple-tracked and supports fairly fast trains. It had been operated by a BNSF ancestor, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, which introduced high-speed ''Zephyr'' passenger trains in 1934 and ran many of them along this subdivision from Chicago to points west. Pace (transit)
Pace is the suburban bus and regional paratransit division of the Regional Transportation Authority in the Chicago metropolitan area. It was created in 1983 by the RTA Act, which established the formula that provides funding to the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra, and Pace. The various agencies providing bus service in the Chicago suburbs were merged under the Suburban Bus Division, which rebranded as Pace in 1984. In 2013, Pace had 39.925 million riders. The BNSF Line (also known informally as the "Racetrack") is a Metra commuter rail line operated by the BNSF Railway in Chicago and its western suburbs. In 2010, the BNSF Line continued to have the highest weekday ridership (average 64,600) of the 11 Metra lines. While Metra does not refer to its lines by particular colors, the BNSF line's color on Metra timetables is "Cascade Green," in honor of the Burlington Northern Railroad. Chicago Union Station is an intercity and commuter rail terminal located in the Near West Side neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The station is Amtrak's flagship station in the Midwest. Downers Grove Train Wreck (1947)
The Downers Grove train wreck happened on April 3, 1947, at the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad station in Downers Grove, Illinois. The ''Twin Cities Zephyr'', a high-speed inter-city passenger train, struck a tractor that had fallen from a freight train only seconds before. Three died and over thirty were injured in the wreck. The ''Twin Cities Zephyr'' had left Minneapolis at 5:10 PM with EMD E5 #9914A pulling a seven car trainset called "The Train of the Goddesses". The train carried many college students and others traveling for the coming Easter weekend and was due at Chicago's Union Station at midnight.
