Down And Out In America
''Down and Out in America'' is a 1986 American Oscar-winning documentary film directed by Academy Award winner Lee Grant. Summary It is a biting critique of Reaganomics and exploration of poverty in the United States. It won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, tying with '' Artie Shaw: Time Is All You've Got''. Production Produced by Grant's husband Joseph Feury and Milton Justice, this was the first Academy Award for HBO. ''Down and Out in America'' was produced under Grant and husband/producer Joseph Feury's production deal with HBO. The film was greenlit while Grant was still on location in Yugoslavia on another project. She reportedly told Feury that the subject was too important and that if she could not return in time he should let another director make the film. Lee Grant
Lee Grant (born Lyova Haskell Rosenthal; October 31, during the mid-1920s) is an American actress, documentarian, and director. She made her film debut in 1951 as a young shoplifter in William Wyler's ''Detective Story'', co-starring Kirk Douglas and Eleanor Parker. This role earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress as well as winning the Best Actress Award at the 1952 Cannes Film Festival. In 1952, she was blacklisted from most acting jobs for the next 12 years. Grant was able to find only occasional work onstage or as a teacher during this period. It also contributed to her divorce. During this time, Grant appeared in plays on stage. She was removed from the blacklist in 1963 and started to rebuild her on-screen acting career. She starred in 71 TV episodes of '' Peyton Place'' (1965–1966), followed by lead roles in films such as '' Valley of the Dolls'' and '' In the Heat of the Night'' in 1967, as well as ''Shampoo'' (1975), for which she won an Oscar. ... Virtual cinema is a video-on-demand streaming service facilitated by independent film distributors and art-house theaters to release new films and share profits. Under the service, part of the admission price supports a physically located theater. Background As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, movie theaters were closed down for public safety. In 2020 from March through April, virtual cinema proliferated during the theaters' closures. Several distributors of independent films, including Kino Lorber, Film Movement, and Music Box Films, were early adopters.
