''Down'' is the fourth album by the Finnish metal band Sentenced, released in November 1996 via Century Media. It is also the first album including the vocalist Ville Laihiala. This album is the band's first pure gothic metal album. Sentenced was a Finnish gothic metal band that played melodic death metal in their early years. The band formed in 1989 in the town of Muhos and broke up in 2005. History Early years (1988–1991) Sentenced started in 1988 as Deformity and changed their name to Sentenced in 1989, after a few line-up changes. The original line-up consisted of Miika Tenkula (lead guitar and vocals), Sami Lopakka (guitar), Vesa Ranta (drums), and Lari Kylmänen (bass). They recorded two demo tapes: ''When Death Joins Us...'' in 1990 and ''Rotting Ways to Misery'' in 1991. The band actually got their very first record deal (with the French label Thrash Records) after their first demo. Samael is a Swiss extreme metal band formed in 1987 in Sion, Switzerland, Sion. The current line up of the band include founding members and brothers Michael Locher, Vorphalack (Vorph) and Xytraguptor (Xy), guitarist Drop and bassist Ales. Michael Locher (born 7 January 1969), also known as Vorphalack or simply Vorph, is a Swiss musician who provides vocals and is a guitarist for the industrial/black metal band Samael. Biography Locher was born in Sion. He co-founded Samael in 1987 with his brother Alexandre (also known as "Xytras" or "Xy") on drums. Locher's musical influences include Celtic Frost, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Venom, Bathory and early Possessed. He particularly points to Bathory as a source of inspiration for vocals: His guitar is a customized ESP Viper with Ernie Ball guitar strings, Boss GT pro, Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier. Sami Lopakka
Sami Lopakka is a Finnish guitarist and author. He was one of two guitarists for the metal band Sentenced until it disbanded (1989–2005). He was the band's main lyricist and was also considered to be the spokesman for the band. Since 2007, Lopakka has been the guitarist and main songwriter for the Russian-singing Finnish metal band KYPCK, with whom he plays a custom baritone guitar built around a Kalashnikov AK-47 assault rifle by Amfisound Guitars. As an author, Lopakka's debut novel ''Marras'' was published in January 2014 by Like Kustannus Oy in Finland. Gothic metal (or goth metal) is a fusion genre combining the aggression of heavy metal with the dark atmospheres of gothic rock. The music of gothic metal is diverse with bands known to adopt the gothic approach to different styles of heavy metal music. Ville Laihiala (born 13 June 1973) is a Finnish musician. He was the vocalist and guitarist of the gothic metal band Poisonblack. He was also the frontman for Sentenced from 1996 (when he replaced their former bassist and vocalist Taneli Jarva) until the group ended their career in 2005. When joining Sentenced, he was soon accepted by fans. He wrote very few songs for Sentenced (whose main songwriters were Miika Tenkula and Sami Lopakka), for example the song "Aika Multaa Muistot" on the album ''The Cold White Light''.
