Ukrainian Surname
By the 18th century almost all Ukrainians had family names. Most Ukrainian surnames (and surnames in Slavic languages in general) are formed by adding possessive and other suffixes to given names, place names, professions and other words. Surnames were developed for official documents or business record keeping to differentiate the parties who might have the same first name. By the 15th century, surnames were used by the upper class, nobles and large land owners. In cities and towns, surnames became necessary in the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1632, Orthodox Metropolitan Petro Mohyla ordered priests to include a surname in all records of birth, marriage and death. After the partitions of Poland (1772–1795), Western Ukraine came under the Austrian Empire, where peasants needed surnames for taxation purposes and military service and churches were required to keep records of all births, deaths and marriages. Alexander Dovzhenko (psychiatrist)
Aleksandr Romanovich Dovzhenko (russian: link=no, Александр Романович Довженко; uk, link=no, Олександр Романович Довженко; 1918–1995) was a Soviet and Ukrainian physician, psychiatrist, psychotherapist and substance abuse counselor. He is most famous for developing the Coding (therapy), Dovzhenko's method ("Coding"). Biography Aleksandr Dovzhenko was born on March 29, 1918, in a family of a seaman. In 1936 Dovzhenko has entered Medical Academy named after S.I. Georgievsky of Vernadsky CFU, the Crimean Medical Institute and was graduated in 1941. After graduation Dovzhenko worked as a doctor in various places, where he began to implement modern psycho-therapeutic methods. In 1948 he was appointed as chief physician of a dermato-venerologic clinic in Feodosia. Afterwards for some time Dovzhenko worked in a medical office of the Feodosian Sea Port. Grigoriy Avksentiyevich Dovzhenko (22 April 1899 – 21 April 1980) was a Ukrainian muralist, Honoured Artist of USSR, member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine. Biography Grigoriy Avksentiyevich Dovzhenko was born on 22 April (10 April old style) 1899, in Poltavka village (now Bashtanka, Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine). In 1907 – 1913 he studied in Poltava local school (2 classes). In 1913 his family moved to Gvozdievka village in Siberia. In 1916 Grigoriy Dovzhenko moved to Omsk, where he was working as a porter. At the same time he passed exams without attending the higher school. In 1917 Dovzhenko began studying at the Red Arts of Siberia. Oleksandr Petrovych Dovzhenko or Alexander Petrovich Dovzhenko ( uk, Олександр Петрович Довженко, ''Oleksandr Petrovych Dovzhenko''; russian: Алекса́ндр Петро́вич Довже́нко, ''Aleksandr Petrovich Dovzhenko''; November 25, 1956), was a Ukrainian Soviet screenwriter, film producer and director. He is often cited as one of the most important early Soviet filmmakers, alongside Sergei Eisenstein, Dziga Vertov, and Vsevolod Pudovkin, as well as being a pioneer of Soviet montage theory. The Dovzhenko Film Studios ( uk, Національна кіностудія художніх фільмів імені О. Довженка, translit. ''Natsional'na kinostudiya khudozhnikh filmiv imeni O. Dovzhenka'') is a former Soviet film production studio in Ukraine that was named after the Soviet film producer, Oleksandr Dovzhenko, in 1957. With the fall of the Soviet Union, the studio became a property of the government of Ukraine. In 2000 the film studio was awarded national status.
