Liverwort
The Marchantiophyta () are a division of non-vascular land plants commonly referred to as hepatics or liverworts. Like mosses and hornworts, they have a gametophyte-dominant life cycle, in which cells of the plant carry only a single set of genetic information. It is estimated that there are about 9000 species of liverworts. Some of the more familiar species grow as a flattened leafless thallus, but most species are leafy with a form very much like a flattened moss. Leafy species can be distinguished from the apparently similar mosses on the basis of a number of features, including their single-celled rhizoids. Leafy liverworts also differ from most (but not all) mosses in that their leaves never have a costa (present in many mosses) and may bear marginal cilia (very rare in mosses). Other differences are not universal for all mosses and liverworts, but the occurrence of leaves arranged in three ranks, the presence of deep lobes or segmented leaves, or a lack of clearly diff ... Charles Isidore Douin
Charles Isidore Douin (1858 – 1944) was a French bryologist who was a native of Bouville, Eure-et-Loir. Biography He taught school in Chartres, and was the author of a highly regarded work on mosses and liverworts titled ''Nouvelle flore des mousses et des hépatiques pour la détermination facile des espèces'' (1892). He also published a book involving bryology of Eure-et-Loir, ''Muscinées d'Eure-et-Loir'' (1906). The liverwort genus ''Douinia'' from the family Scapaniaceae is named in his honor in 1928. Circumscription (taxonomy)
In biological taxonomy, circumscription is the content of a taxon, that is, the delimitation of which subordinate taxa are parts of that taxon. If we determine that species X, Y, and Z belong in Genus A, and species T, U, V, and W belong in Genus B, those are our circumscriptions of those two genera. Another systematist might determine that T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z all belong in genus A. Agreement on circumscriptions is not governed by the Codes of Zoological or Botanical Nomenclature, and must be reached by scientific consensus. A goal of biological taxonomy is to achieve a stable circumscription for every taxon. This goal conflicts, at times, with the goal of achieving a natural classification that reflects the evolutionary history of divergence of groups of organisms. Balancing these two goals is a work in progress, and the circumscriptions of many taxa that had been regarded as stable for decades are in upheaval in the light of rapid developments in molecular phylogenetics ... Christian Erasmus Otterstrøm Jensen
Christian Erasmus Otterstrøm (Otterström) Jensen (1859–1941) was a Danish pharmacist and botanist, for decades a leading bryologist in Scandinavia. He studied botany and pharmaceutics at the University of Copenhagen and the Pharmaceutical College in Copenhagen. For the better part of his adult life, he ran a pharmacy in Hvalsø, Denmark, while devoting all available time to the study of mosses Mosses are small, non-vascular flowerless plants in the taxonomic division Bryophyta (, ) ''sensu stricto''.
