Douglas Wanderers F.C.
Douglas Wanderers F.C. was an association football club from Castle Douglas in Dumfriesshire. History The club was founded in 1893; there are matches recorded for a club called Castle Douglas Wanderers from 1886 to 1890, playing on the Commons, but, as Douglas Wanderers held a first anniversary celebration in 1894, this refers to a different club. The club entered the Scottish FA Cup from 1896–97 to 1934–35. It won through the qualifying rounds to play in the first round proper on seven occasions; it once won through to round 2, in 1902–03, beating Abercorn in a replay in the first round. Its tie in the second round with Stenhousemuir F.C. was abandoned in the first half (along with a number of other ties on the same day) because of a storm that hit southern Scotland, and the Warriors beat the Wanderers 6–1 in the postponed tie. Charles Oliver Bell (18 May 1894 – 5 June 1939) was a footballer and manager. Birth There is some uncertainty over the details of Charlie Bell's birth. Some sources report him as being born in Dumfries in Scotland, although RSSSF states that he was born in Cambridge in England. Playing career He started his footballing career as a junior with Dumfries Wanderers and after a short spell at Castle Douglas side, Douglas Wanderers, he decided to move down south, signing for Carlisle City. He then played for other clubs south of the border, namely Woolwich Arsenal, Chesterfield, Barrow and Queens Park Rangers in a career impacted by World War I. Coaching and management After coaching jobs at Sporting Clube de Portugal, Reading and Notts County, he became a full-time manager at Wigan Borough. Castle Douglas ( gd, Caisteal Dhùghlais) is a town in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It lies in the lieutenancy area of Kirkcudbrightshire, in the eastern part of Galloway, between the towns of Dalbeattie and Gatehouse of Fleet. It is in the ecclesiastical parish of Kelton. History Castle Douglas is built next to Carlingwark Loch in which traces of prehistoric crannogs can be found, evidence of early inhabitation of the area. A large bronze cauldron containing about 100 metal objects was found in Carlingwark Loch near Fir Island about 1866. The hoard of tools of iron and bronze is probably Romano-Belgic of the late first or early second centuries AD and is likely to have been a votive offering.
