Douglas Gibson Hamilton
Douglas Gibson Hamilton (born 15 August 1941) is an Australian chess player who holds the titles of FIDE Master and International Correspondence Chess Master (2001). He is a three-time Australian Chess Championship winner (1965, 1967, 1982). Biography In the 1960s and 1970s, Hamilton was one of the strongest chess players in Australia. He regularly participated in the Australian Chess Championship and won this tournament three times: in 1965, 1967, and 1982. In 1966, in Auckland, Hamilton played in the World Chess Championship South East Asian Zonal tournament and shared 5th–6th place. International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF) was founded on 26 March 1951 as a new appearance of the International Correspondence Chess Association (ICCA), which was founded in 1945, as successor of the Internationaler Fernschachbund (IFSB), founded on 2 December 1928. Correspondence chess is chess played by various forms of long-distance correspondence, traditionally through the postal system. Today it is usually played through a correspondence chess server, a public internet chess forum, or email. Less common methods that have been employed include fax, homing pigeon and phone. It is in contrast to (OTB) chess, where the players sit at a chessboard at the same time, or play each other in real time via the internet. Correspondence chess allows people or clubs who are geographically distant to play one another without meeting in person. These distant relationships are just one of the many distinct appeals of correspondence chess. The 20th Chess Olympiad ( mk, 20. Шаховска олимпијада, ''20. Šahovska olimpijada''), organized by Fédération Internationale des Échecs, FIDE and comprising an open team tournament, as well as several other events designed to promote the game of chess, took place between September 18 and October 13, 1972, in Skopje, Yugoslavia (present-day Republic of Macedonia, Macedonia). Summary For the first time, the Soviet team only comprised 5 Grandmaster (chess), GMs and one International Master, IM (Savon). Since Bobby Fischer had beaten Spassky earlier in the year, the team wasn't led by the current world champion – also a first. 19th Chess Olympiad
The 19th Chess Olympiad (german: Die 19. Schacholympiade), comprising an open team tournament as well as the annual FIDE congress, took place between September 5–27, 1970, in Siegen, West Germany. The Soviet team with six Grandmasters, led by world champion Boris Spassky, lived up to expectations and won their tenth consecutive gold medal, although only by a single point, with Hungary and Yugoslavia taking the silver and bronze, respectively. Tournament report Held at the Siegerland Hall venue, a total of 64 nations applied to enter the tournament. Unfortunately, space constraints and FIDE's intended model format meant that only 60 could be accommodated.
