Douglas Dollarhide
Douglas Dollarhide (March 11, 1923 – June 28, 2008) was an American politician, notable for serving as the first African American mayor of Compton, California. Biography Douglas F. Dollarhide witnessed first hand the transformation of Compton, California from a predominantly white Los Angeles suburb into one of the most heavily concentrated African American communities in the United States. He was elected to the City Council in 1963, becoming its first African American member. In 1969, Dollarhide made history again, when he became the first black mayor of Compton. After his election crime rose and property values declined throughout Compton. He was defeated for reelection in 1973. Compton's Dollarhide Neighborhood Center is named after him. Dollarhide died on June 28, 2008, aged 85, at his home in Northridge in the San Fernando Valley. Northridge, Los Angeles, California
Northridge is a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of the City of Los Angeles. The community is home to California State University, Northridge, and the Northridge Fashion Center. Originally named Zelzah by settlers in 1908, the community was renamed North Los Angeles in 1929 but the appellation sometimes caused confusion between North Hollywood and Los Angeles. In 1938, civic leader Carl S. Dentzel decided to rename the community to Northridge Village, which morphed into modern-day Northridge. The Northridge area can trace its history back to the Tongva people and later to Spanish explorers. It was sold by the Mexican governor Pio Pico to Eulogio de Celis, whose heirs divided it for resale. Population The 2000 U.S. census counted 57,561 residents in the Northridge neighborhood—or , among the lowest population densities for the city. The first African American mayors were elected during Reconstruction in the Southern United States beginning about 1867. Compton is a city in southern Los Angeles County, California, United States, situated south of downtown Los Angeles. Compton is one of the oldest cities in the county and, on May 11, 1888, was the eighth city in Los Angeles County to incorporate.
