Doug Widell
Douglas Joseph Widell (born September 23, 1966) is a former guard who played 9 seasons in the National Football League. He was drafted by the Broncos in the second round of the 1989 NFL Draft. He was a part of the Denver Broncos Super Bowl XXIV losing team. Guard (gridiron Football)
In gridiron football, a guard (G), otherwise known as an offensive guard (OG), is a player who lines up between the center (American football), center and the offensive tackle, tackles on the offensive line of a football team on the line of scrimmage used primarily for Blocking (American football), blocking. Right guards (RG) is the term for the guards on the right of the offensive line, while left guards (LG) are on the left side. Guards are to the right or left of the center. The guard's job is to protect the quarterback from the incoming defensive line, linemen during pass plays, as well as creating openings (holes) for the running backs to head through. 1997 NFL Season
The 1997 NFL season was the 78th regular season of the National Football League. The Oilers relocated from Houston, Texas to Nashville, Tennessee. The newly renamed Tennessee Oilers played their home games during this season at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee while construction of a new stadium in Nashville started. Houston would rejoin the NFL with the expansion Texans in 2002. Due to Game 7 of the 1997 World Series, the Chicago Bears–Miami Dolphins game at Pro Player Stadium was delayed one day to Monday, October 27. The season ended with Super Bowl XXXII when the Denver Broncos defeated the Green Bay Packers 31–24 at Qualcomm Stadium. David Harold Widell, Jr. (born May 14, 1965) is a former American football guard and tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Atlanta Falcons. He played college football at Boston College. Early years Widell attended South Catholic High School in Connecticut, where he originally played the trombone in the school band. In football, he played at tight end and nose tackle. He didn't start until his junior season. He received All-state honors at both positions as a senior. He also was the center for the basketball team. College career Widell accepted a football scholarship to play at Boston College. As a redshirt freshman, he was a backup at left tackle.
