Doug Bruce (rugby Player)
Oliver Douglas Bruce (born 23 May 1947) is a former New Zealand rugby union player and coach. A Rugby union positions#Fly-half, first five-eighth, Bruce represented Mid Canterbury Rugby Football Union, Mid Canterbury and Canterbury Rugby Football Union, Canterbury at a provincial level, and was a member of the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, from 1974 to 1978. He played 41 matches for the All Blacks including 14 internationals. He went on to be the assistant coach of Canterbury between 1982 and 1985, and the coach of that side from 1987 to 1988. Rugby Union Positions
In the game of rugby union, there are 15 players on each team, comprising eight forwards (wearing jerseys numbered 1–8) and seven backs (numbered 9–15). In addition, there may be up to eight replacement players "on the bench", numbered 16–23. Players are not restricted to a single position, although they generally specialise in just one or two that suit their skills and body types. Players that play multiple positions are called "utility players". Forwards compete for the ball in scrums and line-outs and are generally bigger and stronger than the backs. The Mid Canterbury Rugby Football Union (MCRFU) is a rugby province in the South Island of New Zealand. History The Mid Canterbury Rugby Football Union was formed in 1904 as Ashburton Country, first as a sub-union of the South Canterbury Rugby Football Union and then of the Canterbury Rugby Football Union. The Canterbury Rugby Football Union (also referred to as "Canterbury" or "CRFU") is the governing body for rugby union in a portion of the Canterbury region of New Zealand. Its colours are red and black in a hooped design. The CRFU govern the running of the Canterbury representative team which have won New Zealand's first-tier domestic competition National Provincial Championship (Air New Zealand Cup and ITM Cup) 14 times including a "six-peat" from 2008 to 2013 – with five in the National Provincial Championship, two in the Air New Zealand Cup, five in the ITM Cup and one in the Mitre 10 Cup.
