Turntablism
Turntablism is the art of manipulating sounds and creating new music, sound effects, mixes and other creative sounds and beats, typically by using two or more turntables and a cross fader-equipped DJ mixer. The mixer is plugged into a PA system (for live events) and/or broadcasting equipment (if the DJ is performing on radio, TV or Internet radio) so that a wider audience can hear the turntablist's music. Turntablists atypically manipulate records on a turntable by moving the record with their hand to cue the stylus to exact points on a record, and by touching or moving the platter or record to stop, slow down, speed up or, spin the record backwards, or moving the turntable platter back and forth (the popular rhythmic "scratching" effect which is a key part of hip hop music), all while using a DJ mixer's crossfader control and the mixer's gain and equalization controls to adjust the sound and level of each turntable. Turntablists typically use two or more turntables and headphon ...

12 Step Program (album)
''12 Step Program'' (also stylized as 12SP) is the ninth album by the People Under the Stairs. It is the second album entirely self-distributed using Thes One's artist-cooperative label, Piecelock 70, and it is also the group's shortest record to be marketed as a full-length album upon its release. (The group's fifth album, '' ...Or Stay Tuned'', while shorter, was initially marketed as an EP.) ''12 Step Program'' is also the group's first album since their second album, ''Question in the Form of an Answer'', that uses only samples and no live instrumentation. Despite not having a physical release, the track "1 Up Til Sun Up" was the lead single from the album. A music video for the song was released on April 7, 2014, the same day that iTunes debuted the song and began accepting pre-orders for ''12 Step Program''. Upon the album release, PUTS embarked on a North American tour in support of the album, with plans to visit other countries later in the year. Recording People Under ...

Highlighter (album)
''Highlighter'' is the eighth album by the People Under the Stairs, and the first one released on Thes One's artist-cooperative label, Piecelock 70. With the exception of an iTunes-only EP, the album was released without accompanying singles or music videos. In the months following the release of ''Highlighter'', PUTS embarked on yet another tour in support of the album. Background Still disappointed with the way that the various record labels had handled the duo's albums and accompanying promotion during the first decade of their career, Thes One made the decision after '' Carried Away'' to take complete control of the production process for the group's albums from start-to-finish. Thes One also decided to release all new material under a new worker cooperative business entity and label, Piecelock 70 (also styled as PL70). Recording Now free of the demands of a label, People Under the Stairs were able to stretch themselves artistically and control all the decisions about the ...

Carried Away (People Under The Stairs Album)
''Carried Away'' is the seventh studio album by People Under the Stairs. The group chose to release the album on the independent label, Om Records, which they had last been on for 2003's '' ...Or Stay Tuned''. The album is a mixture of the Golden age hip hop sound of their earlier Om releases, and a continuation of the more expansive sample-sourcing of their last two albums. ''Carried Away'' produced three singles and two music videos, and the album continued the tradition of a steady stream of positive reviews for the group. Background In the first months of 2009, the group toured constantly to support their latest release, ''Fun DMC''. They became one of the first independent music groups to tour China, and they also received positive concert reviews when they appeared on the opening days of both the Coachella Music Festival in April and the Bonnaroo Music Festival in June. Feeling inspired by their touring success, the group immediately returned to the studio following their ...

Fun DMC
''Fun DMC'' is the sixth album by People Under the Stairs. The album was a concept album and, at the time of its release, the most widely reviewed and lauded of the group's catalog. In support of the album, PUTS released two singles, as well as the group's first music video for "The Wiz". For the release of the album, the group again chose an independent label, Gold Dust Media. Recording The name of the album is partly a homage to the group Run–D.M.C., but also an expression of what the group felt that they provided to their listeners: a relaxing party album, with bits of introspection mixed in. For the first time, the group decided to create a concept album involving the daily life of a typical Central or South Central Los Angeles resident. They even brought recording equipment to a summer house party and barbecue, and used the ambient noise from the party to supplement the opening, "daytime" songs on the new album. The first half of the album includes songs about record ...

The Om Years
''The Om Years'' is the second compilation album by People Under the Stairs. It is a combination of popular tracks from the group's first four albums ('' The Next Step'', ''Question in the Form of an Answer'', '' O.S.T.'' and '' ...Or Stay Tuned''), and also includes extra b-sides and rarities. The album was released in two formats: *A double-CD album, with the album tracks on the first CD, titled ''Disc 1: The Om Years'', and a second bonus CD, titled ''Disc 2: B-Sides and Rarities''. *A double-LP album, with a selection of the first CD's tracks, and two songs ("The Bomb Combo" and "Out Da Club") from the b-sides & rarities CD. Om Records released this compilation album in an attempt to capitalize on the buzz about the group's upcoming album, ''Fun DMC'', and the group's past success with the label. The group would return to the Om label on 2009's '' Carried Away''. CD track listing All songs written by Christopher "Thes One" Portugal and Michael "Double K" Turner, except ...

Stepfather (album)
''Stepfather'' is the fifth album by the People Under the Stairs. The album signified a departure from the group's previous, Golden age hip hop sound, and the album introduced a more widely varied array of sample sources. The album also spawned two singles, "Tuxedo Rap" and "Pass The 40". Distribution of the album was handled in the United States by the local Los Angeles label Basement Records, and the release overseas was handled by Tres Records, a label co-founded by Thes One with Chikara Kurahashi from Giant Panda. Background After the release of the People Under the Stairs' previous record, ...Or Stay Tuned and another world tour, Thes One and Double K found themselves free of their record contract with Om Records, and as a result, the group felt more personally responsible for the direction of their music. They also took some time to record side projects, and Thes One married his longtime girlfriend. The group started to move away from the "party life" they had enjoyed wh ...
