Dot McNab
Dorothy Pauline McNab (née Lamason; 8 December 1921 – 8 August 1995) was a New Zealand women’s military administrator, political organiser and community leader. Early life McNab was born Dorothy Pauline Lamason was born in Napier, New Zealand, Napier, New Zealand, on 8 December 1921. After her father died, she left Napier Girls' High School early and became an administrator. She joined the New Zealand Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) clerical division in 1942 and went overseas as part of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Egypt and Italy. She married Tom McNab in 1947, and the couple went on to have two sons. Political and professional life McNab joined the New Zealand National Party in 1950, and in 1966 she became a Dominion councillor for Balclutha. She provided advice to politicians including Prime Minister Keith Holyoake. In 1976, she was the first woman to chair a division and become a vice president of the National Party. New Zealand Suffrage Centennial Medal
The New Zealand Suffrage Centennial Medal 1993 was established by Royal Warrant on 1 July 1993. It was created to commemorate Women's suffrage in New Zealand and to recognize those New Zealand and Commonwealth citizens who had made a significant contribution to women's rights or women's issues in New Zealand. The medal was only awarded in 1993. Background Women's suffrage in New Zealand was achieved by the passage of the Electoral Act 1893 on 19 September 1893. To commemorate the centennial of that event the medal was created. The medal served to recognize New Zealanders and other Commonwealth citizens who had made a significant or recognisable contribution to the rights of women or to women's issues within New Zealand. The medal was awarded to 544 men and women. Design The medal is circular, struck in bronze with an antique finish. The obverse depicts the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Napier Girls' High School
Napier Girls' High School is a state secondary school on Clyde Road, Napier, New Zealand. It is one of the oldest schools in New Zealand for girls, and has a current school roll of about 1000. History In July 1883 plans were submitted to the board of governors for a school for girls in Napier, and the following month the board advertised for a lady principal who would be required to teach English, Latin, French and Mathematics and take charge of the boarding establishment. Miss Mary Hewett was appointed, and the school opened on 29 January 1884. The original school course included English, French, Latin, German, Drawing, Singing and Calisthenics. Thirty-nine pupils were on the books that first day, and one boarder was enrolled. The original school building had classrooms on the ground floor, and rooms for the boarders upstairs. It stood where the main hostel building, Hewett House, now stands. It was badly damaged in the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake, and had to be demolished. T ...
