Dorsland Tree
The Dorsland tree, also known as the Dorsland Baobab and the Dorsland Grootboom ( af, Large Thirstland Tree), is a baobab tree in Namibia which is found to the south of the Khaudum National Park. At around 2,100 years old, it is believed to be the oldest tree in the country. It is high, has a circumference of more than and keeps growing despite having fallen over. In 2006, two of its oldest relatives died. The previous oldest tree in the country, known as ''Grootboom'', was high, but died in 2005. The tree was where the Dorsland trekkers camped in 1883 and they carved the year of the visit, "1883", into the tree. In 1891 a detachment of German troops passed the tree and carved "1891" and the name of three in the group "H. Gathemann", "E. Heller" and "D. Hannemann" into the tree. Khaudum National Park
Khaudum National Park is an isolated Nature Reserve situated in the Kalahari Desert at the west of the Caprivi Strip in northeast of Namibia. It is a very remote and inaccessible reserve but is home to some magnificent animals, such as the lion and hyena. The park also has a campsite for visitors. Geography The Khaudum National Park is located in Kalahari Desert. The three largest dry rivers (known as Omuramba)— Nhoma, Cwiba, and Khaudum—run through the wildlife park. They play an important ecological role when they run during the rainy season. Climate The Kavango East Region has a long, dry season from April to November and a subsequent wet period from December to March. Lonely Planet is a travel guide book publisher. Founded in Australia in 1973, the company has printed over 150 million books. History Early years Lonely Planet was founded by married couple Maureen and Tony Wheeler. In 1972, they embarked on an overland trip through Europe and Asia to Australia, following the route of the Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition. The company name originates from the misheard "lovely planet" in a song written by Matthew Moore. Lonely Planet's first book, ''Across Asia on the Cheap'', had 94 pages; it was written by the couple in their home. The original 1973 print run consisted of stapled booklets with pale blue cardboard covers.
