Doris Marie Bender
Doris Marie Bender (November 29, 1911 – November 15, 1991) was an Alabama social worker. Her programs to help the elderly and disabled adults, developed in Mobile County, became models for later state-wide efforts to protect these groups of people. Bender was inducted into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame in 1994. Biography Bender was the oldest of four children and born in Mobile, Alabama to Mary Frances McCafferty Bender and Theodore Jackson Bender. She helped raise her younger siblings after the death of her mother. Bender earned an undergraduate degree at the University of Alabama and did graduate work in the field of social work at Tulane University and the University of Chicago. Bender began work with the Mobile County Relief Administration in 1933. Bender took over as director of public welfare for Mobile County in 1943. Alabama Women's Hall Of Fame
The Alabama Women's Hall of Fame honors the achievements of women associated with the U.S. state of Alabama. Established in 1970, the first women were inducted the following year. The museum is located in Bean Hall, a former Carnegie Library, on the campus of Judson College in Marion, Alabama. It became a state agency in 1975 by an act of the Alabama Legislature. Mobile County, Alabama
Mobile County ( ) is located in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Alabama. It is the second most-populous county in the state after Jefferson County. As of the 2020 census, its population was 414,809. Its county seat is Mobile, which was founded as a deepwater port on the Mobile River. The only such port in Alabama, it has long been integral to the economy for providing access to inland waterways as well as the Gulf of Mexico. Foster Care
Foster care is a system in which a minor has been placed into a ward, group home (residential child care community, treatment center, etc.), or private home of a state-certified caregiver, referred to as a "foster parent" or with a family member approved by the state. The placement of the child is normally arranged through the government or a social service agency. The institution, group home, or foster parent is compensated for expenses unless with a family member. In some states, relative or "Kinship" caregivers of children who are wards of the state are provided with a financial stipend.
