Doris Irene Taylor
Doris Irene Taylor (25 July 1901 — 23 May 1968) was an Australian social services activist. Early life and education Doris Irene Taylor was born in Norwood, South Australia, Norwood, South Australia in 1901, the daughter of Thomas Simpkin Taylor and Angelina Williams Taylor. Her father was a bricklayer. Twice in childhood, she survived falls that caused her a limp and paralysis. In 1925 she was injured in a collision with a car, while her sister Ivy was pushing her wheelchair. Career During the 1930s Taylor worked as a secretary and a fundraiser for a mothers' club, and for a soup kitchen. She moved into political work with the Australian Labor Party by the mid-1940s, and directed a survey of housing conditions. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. Port Adelaide is a port-side region of Adelaide, approximately northwest of the Adelaide CBD. Norwood is a suburb of Adelaide, about east of the Adelaide city centre. The suburb is in the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters, whose predecessor was the oldest South Australian local government municipality. Meals On Wheels
Meals on Wheels is a programme that delivers meals to individuals at home who are unable to purchase or prepare their own meals. The name is often used generically to refer to home-delivered meals programmes, not all of which are actually named "Meals on Wheels". Many of the housebound recipients are the elderly, and many of the volunteers are also elderly but able-bodied and able to drive automobiles. Research shows that home-delivered meal programmes significantly improve diet quality, reduce food insecurity and improve quality-of-life among the recipients.
