Estelle Skidmore Doremus
Estelle Emma Doremus ( Skidmore; May 6, 1830 May 21, 1905) was the daughter of Hubbard Skidmore, who served in the American Revolutionary War, and became a charter member and honorary vice president general of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She was a charter officer and regent of the New York City chapter of the DAR between 1892 and 1894. The wife of U.S. chemist Robert Ogden Doremus, she was a leading member of the American community in Paris during the height of the Second French Empire. Upon returning to New York City, she and her husband became important figures in society and well-known supporters of music and the arts, including the Philharmonic Society, of which her husband served as president for many years. Drake Doremus (born March 29, 1983) is an American film director, screenwriter and producer best known for directing the films ''Like Crazy'' (2011), which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, '' Douchebag'' (2010) which was in Dramatic competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, and '' Equals'' (2015). Career Doremus studied directing at the AFI Conservatory, being the youngest fellow ever accepted into the film school. Doremus' mother, Cherie Kerr, was a founding member of the legendary L.A. The Groundlings. Doremus grew up on Kerr's stage, performing with the Orange County Crazies, starting at the age of six as an improv comedy player. Robert Ogden Doremus
Robert Ogden Doremus (11 January 1824 – 22 March 1906) was a United States chemist and physician. Biography Doremus was the son of philanthropist Sarah Platt Doremus and her merchant husband Thomas. He studied at Columbia, and graduated from New York University in 1842. Here he came under the influence of John W. Draper, and in 1843 became his assistant in the medical department of the University. This office he held for seven years, and aided Draper in many of his famous researches on light and heat. In 1847 Doremus went to Europe, continuing his chemical studies in Paris with special reference to electrometallurgy, also visiting the establishments where chemical products were manufactured. On his return to New York, in 1848, he established with Charles T. Harris a laboratory on Broadway for the purpose of giving instruction in analytical chemistry, and for making commercial analyses. Charles Avery Doremus (6 September 1851 in New York City – 2 December 1925 in New York City) was an American chemist. Early life and education Charles Avery Doremus was the son of chemist and physician Robert Ogden Doremus. He graduated from the College of the City of New York in 1870, and subsequently studied in the universities of Leipzig and Heidelberg, receiving the degree of Ph.D. from Heidelberg in 1872. Career In 1877 Doremus became professor of chemistry and toxicology in the medical department of the University at Buffalo, which office he held until 1882, when he became assistant to the chair of chemistry and physics in the College of the City of New York. Meanwhile, he had received the appointments in New York City of lecturer on practical chemistry and toxicology in Bellevue Hospital Medical College, and professor of chemistry in the American Veterinary College. Frank Ellsworth Doremus (August 31, 1865 – September 4, 1947) was a politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. Early life Doremus was born in Venango County, Pennsylvania, on August 31, 1865, the son of Sylvester and Sarah Peake Doremus. The Doremus family moved to Ovid, Michigan, in 1866, and then to Portland, Michigan, in 1872. Frank Doremus attended the public schools of Portland and graduated from Detroit College of Law. In 1882, Doremus began work at the ''Portland Observer'', then moved on to take charge of the '' Pewamo Plain Dealer'' and established the '' Portland Review'' in 1885, editing it until 1899. Sarah Platt Doremus (, Haines; also known as, Mrs. T. C. Doremus; 3 August 1802 – 29 January 1877) was a 19th-century American philanthropist. Biography Sarah Platt Haines was born 3 August 1802, in New York City. She was the daughter of Elias Haines, a merchant of New York, and her mother was the daughter of Robert Ogden, a distinguished lawyer of New Jersey. In 1812, she united with her mother in praying for the conversion of the world, and from that time dates her interest in foreign missions. She married, in 1821, Thomas C. Doremus, a merchant, whose wealth thenceforth was freely expended in her benevolent enterprises. In 1828, with eight women, she organized the Greek relief mission, and sent Jonas King to Greece to distribute supplies. John Doremus
John Doremus (August 3, 1931 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma – July 6, 1995 in Naperville, Illinois) was an American radio personality, best known for his radio syndication of ''The Passing Parade'', a series of short stories of remarkable but relatively unknown episodes throughout history. In the late 1950s he acquired the rights to the series, which until then had been a television series, and syndicated it for radio. The stories chronicled such diverse topics as the first white man to discover the mountain gorilla to the espionage and intrigue during wartime. During the mid 1960s he produced ''Patterns in Music'' for WMAQ in Chicago. Benoît Dorémus (born 20 May 1980, in Besançon ) is a French singer-songwriter. He is the fourth of five children and grew up in France. Life Dorémus wrote his first pieces of poetry before the age of ten. He also began to learn to play the guitar.
