Doreen Elliott
Doreen Elliott (1908 - 1966) was a British skier. She was a co-founder of the Ladies' Ski Club and rose to be its president. Life Elliott was born in 1908 and she was one of the three women chosen by Arnold Lunn to found the Ladies' Ski Club in 1923. Zakopane ( Podhale Goral: ''Zokopane'') is a town in the extreme south of Poland, in the southern part of the Podhale region at the foot of the Tatra Mountains. Ladies' Ski Club
The Ladies' Ski Club was founded in 1923, at the suggestion of Arnold Lunn, by Doreen Elliott, Mrs Duncan Harvey and Lunn's wife, (Lady) Mabel Lunn. It was the first club for women who wanted to ski. History The Ladies' Ski Club (LSC) was founded in 1923 at the Palace Hotel on Mürren. The first Swiss club for women, , followed some years later which established some international rivalry. Greta, Lady Raeburn led the LSC to victory three times in friendly races. The first Alpine Ski Club had been created by Lunn in 1908 and, although popular, it denied membership to women. Lunn believed that skiing was an attractive sport for women and he wanted to ensure that Britain had the first ski club for women. FIS Alpine World Ski Championships
The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships is an alpine skiing competition organized by the International Ski Federation (FIS). History The inaugural world championships in alpine skiing were held in 1931. During the 1930s, the event was held annually in Europe, until interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, preventing a 1940 event. An event was held in 1941, but included competitors only from nations from the Axis powers or nations not at war with them. The results were later cancelled by the FIS in 1946 because of the limited number of participants, so they are not considered official. Following the war, the championships were connected with the Olympics for several decades. From 1948 through 1982, the competition was held in even-numbered years, with the Winter Olympics acting as the World Championships through 1980, and a separate competition held in even-numbered non-Olympic years. The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1932 were held 4–6 February in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, the second edition of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships alpine skiing competition and organized by the International Ski Federation (FIS). The combined event was added to the program. Alpine skiing was not yet a part of the Winter Olympics in 1932, held 4–15 February in Lake Placid, New York; it was added to the Olympic program in 1936 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Arnold Lunn
Sir Arnold Henry Moore Lunn (18 April 1888 – 2 June 1974) was a skier, mountaineer and writer. He was knighted for "services to British Skiing and Anglo-Swiss relations" in 1952. His father was a lay Methodist minister, but Lunn was an agnostic and wrote critically about Catholicism before he converted to that religion at the age of 45 and became an apologist. Early life Arnold Lunn was born in Madras, eldest son of three sons and a daughter of Sir Henry Simpson Lunn (1859–1939) and Mary Ethel, née Moore, daughter of a canon. Arlberg-Kandahar
The Arlberg-Kandahar race (often abbreviated A-K or AK) is an annual alpine skiing event. The first edition of the race was held in 1928 in St. Anton, in the Arlberg district of Austria. The location originally alternated between St. Anton and Mürren, Switzerland. Later, it began to be held in other locations as well, such as Chamonix, France, Sestriere, Italy, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Name The two organizers of the original 1928 race were the Ski Club Arlberg in Austria and the British Kandahar Ski Club, based in Mürren. The latter is named after the British military commander Frederick Roberts, Earl of Kandahar, the major benefactor of the club.
