Westmorland County (2016 population: 149,623) is a county in New Brunswick, a province of Canada. It is in the south-eastern part of the province. It contains the fast-growing commercial centre of Moncton and its northern and eastern suburbs. Also located in the county are the university town of Sackville and the tourist destination of Shediac. Westmorland County is centrally located in the Maritimes and is New Brunswick's most populous county. Fishing and tourism are important industries along the Northumberland Strait shore, and there is some mixed farming in the Petitcodiac River Valley and in the Tantramar Marsh region. The city of Moncton accounts for half of the county's population and has developed as a major transportation, distribution, commercial and retail centre. Dorchester is the historic shire town. Dorchester, New Brunswick
Dorchester is a formerly incorporated village and the shire town of Westmorland County, New Brunswick, Canada. It is named for Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester, an 18th-century Governor-General of the old Province of Quebec. It is located on the eastern side of the mouth of the lush Memramcook River valley near the river's discharge point into Shepody Bay. Dorchester is an English-speaking community but it is adjacent to French-speaking Acadian areas farther up the Memramcook River valley. On 1 January 2023, Dorchester merged with the town of Sackville and parts of three local service districts to form the new town of Tantramar. The community's name remains in use by the province's 911 system. Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick
Hopewell Cape is a Canadian village and headland in Albert County, New Brunswick at the northern end of Shepody Bay and the mouth of the Petitcodiac River. Hopewell Cape had been the municipal centre for Albert County prior to the dissolution of county municipal government in the 1960s. However, it was not incorporated as a Village like many other small villages had at that time. Exact population figures are not maintained; however, it is among the largest communities in Hopewell Parish, which had a population in 2016 of 647. Its population density of 4.3/Km2 makes the parish equivalent to the Village of Alma. Hopewell Cape is the site of the Hopewell Rocks, a world-famous geological formation accessible at low tide on Shepody Bay. Memramcook, sometimes also spelled Memramcouke or Memramkouke, is a village in Westmorland County, New Brunswick, Canada. Located in south-eastern New Brunswick, the community is predominantly people of Acadian descent who speak the Chiac derivative of the French language. An agricultural village, it has a strong local patrimony, key to the history of the region. It was home to Mi'kmaqs for many years and was the arrival site of Acadians in 1700. A large part of these Acadians were deported in 1755, but the village itself survived. The Collège Saint-Joseph was the first francophone university in the east of Canada, which opened its doors in 1864 and hosted/organized the first National Acadian Convention in 1881.
