Doofus (comics)
''Doofus'' is an American alternative comic book character created by Rick Altergott. In the low-brow, scatological strip, Doofus and his sidekick/pal Henry Hotchkiss are two foolish creeps who have adventures in the fictional Flowertown, USA. Fantagraphics Books published two issues of the series from 1994 to 1997. Characterization Doofus is a short, obese grown man with facial stubble and a pageboy haircut, topped by a straw boater. He is a known liar and obnoxious human being, with an affinity for sniffing women's underwear. Publication history ''Doofus'' strips first appeared in the alternative weekly '' The Stranger''. ''Doofus'''s comic book debut was in '' Eightball'' #8 (Fantagraphics, May 1992). From 1995 to 1998, ''Doofus'' strips appeared as a backup feature in Peter Bagge's ''Hate'', issues #21–26, and #29–30. Boater
__NOTOC__ A boater (also straw boater, basher, skimmer, The English Panama, cady, katie, canotier, somer, sennit hat, or in Japan, can-can hat, suruken) is a semi-formal summer hat for men, which was popularised in the late 19th century and early 20th century. It is normally made of stiff sennit straw and has a stiff flat crown and brim, typically with a solid or striped grosgrain ribbon around the crown. Boaters were derived from the canotier straw hat worn traditionally by gondoliers in the city of Venice. The Venetian canotier has a ribbon that hangs freely off the back, and they are frequently edged with a matching color ribbon. Because of this, boaters were identified with boating or sailing, hence the name. Boaters were also identified more with sporting events and universities as well. ''Heavy Metal'' is an American science fiction and fantasy fiction, fantasy comics magazine, published beginning in 1977. The magazine is known primarily for its blend of dark fantasy/science fiction, erotica and steampunk comics. Unlike the traditional American comic books of that time bound by the restrictive Comics Code Authority, ''Heavy Metal'' featured explicit content. Fantagraphics (previously Fantagraphics Books) is an American publisher of alternative comics, classic comic strip anthologies, manga, magazines, graphic novels, and the erotic Eros Comix imprint. History Founding Fantagraphics was founded in 1976 by Gary Groth and Michael Catron in College Park, Maryland. The company took over an adzine named ''The Nostalgia Journal'', which it renamed ''The Comics Journal''. Buenaventura Press was a publisher and distributor for comics, prints, anthologies and graphic novels based in Oakland, California, run by Alvin Buenaventura. Publishing history Buenaventura Press originally specialized in handcrafted fine press prints, producing works for Gary Panter, Daniel Clowes, Julie Doucet, Chris Ware and others, before it extended its operations to publishing works in various book formats. The company closed in January 2010, in many ways because of the costs involved in publishing ''Kramers Ergot'' #7 (which appeared in 2008 at a retail price of $125). In September 2010, Alvin Buenaventura launched a new company, Pigeon Press, publishing books & prints and dealing in original art. Buenaventura committed suicide in February 2016. ''Kramers Ergot'' is a series of anthology-style books of comic art edited by Sammy Harkham. Publication history ''Kramers Ergot'' started as a mini-comic self-published by Sammy Harkham under the imprint Avodah Books. Issues 4 and 5 were published by Gingko Press, while issues 6 and 7 were published by Buenaventura Press. Published in November 2008, ''Kramers Ergot'' 7 features almost 60 artists and is larger (16" by 21") and more expensive ($125) than previous editions. An eighth volume was released in January 2012 from PictureBox. A ninth volume was released in April 2016 from Fantagraphics Books. A tenth volume was released in July 2019 from Fantagraphics Books.
