Donovan
Donovan Phillips Leitch (born 10 May 1946), known mononymously as Donovan, is a Scottish musician, songwriter, and record producer. He developed an eclectic and distinctive style that blended folk, jazz, pop, psychedelic rock and world music (notably calypso). He has lived in Scotland, Hertfordshire (England), London, California, and—since at least 2008—in County Cork, Ireland, with his family. Emerging from the British folk scene, Donovan reached fame in the United Kingdom in early 1965 with live performances on the pop TV series ''Ready Steady Go!''. Having signed with Pye Records in 1965, he recorded singles and two albums in the folk vein for Hickory Records, after which he signed to CBS/Epic in the US—the first signing by the company's new vice-president Clive Davis—and became more successful internationally. He began a long and successful collaboration with leading British independent record producer Mickie Most, scoring multiple hit singles and albums in ...

Open Road (Donovan Album)
''Open Road'' is the eighth studio album, and ninth overall, from British singer-songwriter Donovan and the debut album from the short-lived band Open Road. While his previous work was composed by his playing solo on acoustic guitar and then recorded with a shifting cast of session musicians, ''Open Road'' was Donovan's effort toward writing and recording music as a member of a band. History After working with producer Mickie Most on the string of successful albums, Donovan parted ways with Most upon completion of the ''Barabajagal'' sessions. He moved back to the UK against the wishes of his management, who objected due to Britain's heavy taxation and its distance from the American market. For the first two months of 1970, Donovan booked time at London's newly renovated Morgan Studios and began recording and producing the tracks that would form his next album. He made demos of around 20 new songs with just vocals and acoustic guitar, including solo versions of "Changes" and "P ...

Sixty Four
''Sixty Four'' is the 21st studio album and 26th album overall from Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. It is composed of demo tracks recorded by Donovan in 1964. ''Sixty Four'' was released in the United States in February 2004 by Donovan Discs, his own record label. History In the summer of 1964, Donovan negotiated his first record contract with Pye Records and recorded several demo songs. At the time, these demos were intended to circulate within the record company and were not intended for public release. The tapes were subsequently archived and their existence was relatively unknown to the public. When Donovan was assisting with the compilation of his first compact disc boxed set '' Troubadour: The Definitive Collection 1964–1976'' in the early 1990s, he gained possession of the original demos. Two of the songs were released on the boxed set; covers of Tim Hardin's "London Town" and Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Co'dine". The remainder of the tapes remained unreleased. Aft ...

Pied Piper (Donovan Album)
''Pied Piper'' is the twentieth studio album (25th overall), by Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. It marks the third album of his children's music, after the '' For Little Ones'' portion of ''A Gift from a Flower to a Garden'' and '' H.M.S. Donovan''. ''Pied Piper'' was released in both the UK and US (Rhino 78290) on 19 March 2002. History After it became apparent that ''Sutras'' was going to be the only Donovan album released on Rick Rubin's American Recordings label, Donovan withdrew from releasing new music. His focus shifted to restructuring his business by organizing a website and creating his own record label, Donovan Discs. He also began to write an autobiography and search for studio tapes that were deep in record company archives. In the meantime, Beat Goes On Records reissued many of Donovan's albums in the UK. Many of these albums had been out of print since their original vinyl release. With the combination of selecting rare albums and offering them on-line, Beat ...

Sutras (album)
''Sutras'' is the nineteenth studio album (22nd overall) by Scotland, Scottish singer/songwriter Donovan. It was released in the UK (American Recordings (US), American Recordings 74321 39743 2) and the US (American Recordings 43705) on 14 October 1996. The US version does not contain the final track, "The Garden". History By the mid-1990s, the compact disc, CD reissues of Donovan's 1960s albums and the ''Troubadour: The Definitive Collection 1964-1976'' boxed set reacquainted his fans with his music. These releases also introduced him to newer generations, which helped rebuild his fan base. The success of Johnny Cash's ''American Recordings (album), American Recordings'' album prompted producer Rick Rubin to search for other artists who would benefit from the same model. While in the studio with Tom Petty, Rubin mentioned that he would like to work with Donovan. Petty suggested that he call Donovan, which he did. Donovan agreed to have Rubin produce his next album, and prepared ...

One Night In Time
''One Night in Time'' is an unofficial release of studio recordings from Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. His 18th studio album, it was distributed through the fanzine ''Donovan's Friends'' in 1993 on cassette tape. History After his 1984 album ''Lady of the Stars'' failed to meet success in both the US and UK, Donovan temporarily retired from recording studio albums. In 1990, Donovan's 1960's albums were reissued on CD for the first time. His 1990 live album ''Rising'' and the 1992 Epic Records boxed set '' Troubadour: The Definitive Collection 1964-1976'' were also bringing Donovan's music back into record stores. Although this renewed interest in Donovan's music grew over the next few years, in 1993 he was still without a record label in the US or UK. The album was only released on cassette tape. Track listing All tracks by Donovan Leitch, except where noted. Original album #"One Night in Time" (Donovan Leitch, Warwick Embury) #"Dear Heart" #"You Got Me Reeling" #"The Se ...

Lady Of The Stars
''Lady of the Stars'' is the seventeenth studio album, and nineteenth album overall, by the Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released in the UK (RCA PL 70060) i1983and the US (Allegiance Records AV 437) iJanuary 1984 History By 1983, Donovan's albums were receiving little distribution in the UK and none in the US. His popularity had steadily decreased through the 1970s and early 1980s and mainstream record companies were not convinced that Donovan's albums could generate enough record sales to warrant release. Donovan decided that to win over the record companies and reach his American and British fans, he would record new versions of both " Sunshine Superman" and " Season of the Witch" for inclusion on his next album. Both songs were released on the '' Sunshine Superman'' album in 1966 and ''Donovan's Greatest Hits'' in 1969. The name recognition of these two songs would give the record companies marketing leverage and guarantee release. In addition to "Sunshine Su ...

Neutronica
''Neutronica'' is the fifteenth studio album (seventeenth overall) by British singer/songwriter Donovan. It was released in West Germany (RCA PL 28429) in August 1980 and France (Barclay Records BA 253 200149) in 1980. Background After ''Donovan'' failed to chart in both the UK and US, Donovan once again left his long-time producer Mickie Most. He travelled throughout mainland Europe, bringing attention to world hunger and protesting against nuclear proliferation and weapons development. RCA signed him for a European record distribution deal, beginning with ''Neutronica'', released in 1980. The album did not receive distribution in the US or UK. Many of the songs Donovan wrote for ''Neutronica'' are directly related to his political views. At the time, he was campaigning against what he viewed as disproportionate military spending while famine existed across much of the world. Donovan also recorded "Mee Mee I Love You", a song co-written by his daughter Astrella Leitch, and two ...

Donovan (album)
''Donovan'' is the 14th studio album, and sixteenth album overall, from British singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released in the US (Arista AB 4143) in August 1977 and in the UK (RAK SRAK 528) with a different track order in October 1977. Background In 1976, Donovan's record contract with Epic Records came to an end with ''Slow Down World''. The album had only achieved limited chart success, and his contract was not renewed. Donovan's old record producer Mickie Most had launched Rak Records in the UK in 1969 and Donovan and Most teamed up to record Donovan's next album on Rak Records in 1977. Arista Records picked up the distribution rights in the US. In a distinct change from ''Slow Down World'', the songs on ''Donovan'' were an attempt to reach mass audiences again. The songs feature a contemporary sound and, with the exception of "Maya's Dance", generally avoid the gentle balladry of Donovan's previous work. Despite these measures, ''Donovan'' failed to chart in both the US ...

Slow Down World
''Slow Down World'' is the thirteenth studio album (fifteenth overall) by British singer/songwriter Donovan, released in the US ( Epic PE 33945) in May 1976 and the UK (Epic SEPC 86011) on 4 June 1976. Background Over his past few album releases, Donovan had hired a succession of popular record producers in hopes of chart success: Mickie Most for ''Cosmic Wheels'', Andrew Loog Oldham for ''Essence to Essence'' and Norbert Putnam for ''7-Tease''. The success of these albums was mild at best, and indicated a shift in Donovan's popularity away from the superstardom of the 1960s and towards a distinctly smaller fan base. For his next album, Donovan decided to embrace this fan base by taking on the producer duties himself and writing a set of songs that were directly at odds with the popular sounds of the time. While ''Slow Down World'' does contain some upbeat numbers, many of the songs feature tired and resigned lyrics. Two of the songs on ''Slow Down World'' were written by Donova ...

7-Tease
''7-Tease'' is an album by the British singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released in the US (Epic PE 33245) in November 1974 and in the UK (Epic SEPC 69104) in January 1975. The album peaked at No. 135 on the ''Billboard'' 200. History After the low chart success of ''Essence to Essence'', Donovan entered the studio in late 1974 with a different producer and a new set of songs. The songs were originally intended for use as part of an operetta about the preceding 10 years of Donovan's life and times. Some of the songs on ''7-Tease'' feature lyrical lines or melodies from earlier Donovan songs. "The Voice of Protest" features a line about a ship going "all on her starry way", in a direct lift from a line in "The Voyage of the Moon" on '' H.M.S. Donovan''. The melody on "How Silly" is nearly identical to "A Funny Man" from ''H.M.S. Donovan''. Critical reception AllMusic wrote that "a fair hearing of ''7-Tease'' reveals an album steeped in disillusionment, yet built upon beautifu ...
