Reggae () is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its diaspora. A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, " Do the Reggay" was the first popular song to use the word "reggae", effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. While sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of popular Jamaican dance music, the term ''reggae'' more properly denotes a particular music style that was strongly influenced by traditional mento as well as American jazz and rhythm and blues, and evolved out of the earlier genres ska and rocksteady. Arthur Baker (musician)
Arthur Baker (born April 22, 1955) is an American record producer and DJ best known for his work with hip hop artists like Afrika Bambaataa and Planet Patrol, as well as British group New Order. He is also known for remixing the Jill Jones song "Mia Bocca" on the 12" single, taken from her self-titled debut album ''Jill Jones'' (1987), released on Prince's Paisley Park Records, as well as remixing the Pet Shop Boys song, " In The Night". His remix of the song was used as the main theme for the BBC TV programme The Clothes Show between 1986 and 1994. Rockers Revenge was a studio musical project, assembled by producer Arthur Baker in 1982. The group is most remembered by their 1982 post-disco hit " Walking on Sunshine", which peaked at number 1 on the US Dance Chart and number 4 in the UK. Biography The project was a collaboration of music producer Arthur Baker and featured reggae vocalist Donnie Calvin. Arthur primarily focused on the engineering and mixing while Donnie provided lead vocals. Tina B, who is married to Arthur Baker, contributed with backing vocals, writing and arrangement. There was also a backing vocalist called Dwight Hawkes. The group experimented with early elements of freestyle music. The dance club mixes were created by Jellybean Benitez. Edmond Montague Grant (born 5 March 1948) is a Guyanese-British singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, known for his genre-blending sound; his music has blended elements of pop, British rock, soul, funk, reggae, electronic music, African polyrhythms, and Latin music genres such as samba, among many others. In addition to this, he also helped to pioneer the genre of "Ringbang". He was a founding member of the Equals, one of the United Kingdom's first racially-mixed pop groups who are best remembered for their million-selling UK chart-topper, the Grant-penned " Baby, Come Back". His subsequent solo career included the 1982 song " I Don't Wanna Dance", plus the platinum 1983 single "Electric Avenue", which is his biggest international hit. Grant's original version was not a hit, but the song was remade three years later by Rockers Revenge, a studio project assembled by producer Arthur Baker, which became the hit version.
