Donnell S Holt
Donnell S. Holt (March 7, 1908, Graham, North Carolina – 1982) was president and Chairman of the board of Cannon Mills. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1926 with a major in chemistry. Holt had aspirations of attending medical school but the Great Depression made that impossible due to his family's financial state. Holt went to work at the Esther Hosiery Mill. He then got a job in the accounting section at Trevora Mills in Graham. Holt married Margaret McConnell in July 1932. Holt became vice president of Trevora in 1937. During World War II Holt joined the Navy and served as a ground control officer for an aircraft scouting unit. He injured his back while helping pull an American flyer from a plane that had crashed into the ocean. He finished out the war as an executive officer for a navy aircraft carrier service unit. Graham, North Carolina
Graham is a city in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. It is part of the Burlington, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census the population was 17,153. It is the county seat of Alamance County. History Graham was laid out in 1849 as the county seat of the newly formed Alamance County, and was incorporated as a town in 1851; it became a city in 1961. It was named for William Alexander Graham, U.S. senator from North Carolina (1840–1843) and governor of North Carolina (1845–1849). Cannon Mills
The Cannon Mills Company was an American textile manufacturing company based in Kannapolis, North Carolina, that mainly produced towels and bed sheets. Founded in 1887 by James William Cannon, by 1914 the company was the largest towel and sheets manufacturer in the world. Cannon remained family-owned until 1982 when it was sold to David H. Murdock. Murdock sold the company to Fieldcrest in 1985, becoming Fieldcrest-Cannon. The company was subsequently sold to Pillowtex Corporation in 1997, which entered bankruptcy in July 2003. The remaining Cannon brands were purchased by the Iconix Brand Group. Margaret McConnell Holt
Margaret McConnell Holt (1908-1987) was an American artist. Holt was a 1930 graduate of the North Carolina College for Women (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, or UNCG), and she went on to endow a scholarship fund for the UNCG School of Music and to receive an alumni award for her ongoing support of the university. Her father, Dr. DE McConnell, originated Gastonia, North Carolina's first lending library in his dental office circa 1900. Seventy years later Margaret and her husband, Donnel Shaw Holt, President and CEO of Cannon Mills, donated a collection of original art by North Carolina artists to the Gaston County Public Library in memory of her father.
