Donna Harris is an American politician who served as a member of the Indiana House of Representatives for the 2nd district from 2015 to 2016. Early life and education Harris was born in Chicago and raised in East Chicago, Indiana. She graduated from Washington High School. Career Harris was the president of the Indiana State Assembly Club. Earl L. Harris (November 8, 1941 – March 23, 2015) was an American politician who served as a member of the Indiana House of Representatives from 1982 to 2015. Education He attended Indiana University, Purdue University, and the Illinois Institute of Technology. Career Prior to his political career, he served as the fixed assets administrator for the East Chicago School Corp. He also served for six years in the United States Navy Reserve. Harris was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 1982. He served until his death in 2015. His wife, Donna Harris, was elected to succeed him in the House on April 18, 2015. His son, Earl Harris Jr., succeeded her in the House. East Chicago, Indiana
East Chicago is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 29,698 at the 2010 census. The city is home of the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal, an artificial freshwater harbor characterized by industrial and manufacturing activity. Situated along Lake Michigan, East Chicago is about 18 miles from downtown Chicago, Illinois and is just west of Gary, Indiana. History The land that became East Chicago was originally swampland unsuitable for farming. The state of Indiana began selling off plots of land to railroads and speculators after 1851 to fund the local school system. Settlement of the area was very slow at first, and as late as the 1890s, the city had no proper streets or public utilities. East Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1893. The city was named from its location east of Chicago, Illinois. Washington High School was a public high school in East Chicago, Indiana, which opened in 1898 but closed in 1986. Washington High School merged with Roosevelt High School to become East Chicago Central High School, known in the area as "Central." History Athletics The Washington High School Senators athletic teams competed in the Indiana Lake Shore conference from 1969 until the school closed in 1986. Prior to 1969, the school was a member of the Northern Indiana conference (1927-1962), the Northwestern conference (1963-1967) and the Tri-City conference (1968).
