Donald Macleod (politician)
Donald Macleod (October 28, 1878 – April 15, 1957) was a provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1930 until 1935, sitting with the governing United Farmers caucus. Political career Macleod ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1930 Alberta general election. He defeated sitting United Farmers member Willard Washburn and three other candidates in his party primaries held on May 26, 1930. In the election he ran in a straight fight against Liberal candidate George Bryan, winning 53% of the popular vote to hold the electoral district of Stony Plain for his party. Stony Plain, originally named Stonyplain, was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1905 to 2019. The district returned a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta throughout its history, using the first past the post method of voting for most of its existence but single transferable vote from 1926 to 1957. The district was created in 1905 when Alberta became a province. The riding in its original boundaries stretched from the west Edmonton city limits to the British Columbia border, but over time it was significantly reduced in size. Willard Washburn
Willard Moody "Mood" Washburn (September 12, 1875 – August 16, 1961) was a provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1921 to 1930 sitting with the governing United Farmers caucus. Political career Washburn ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1921 Alberta general election. He stood as the United Farmers candidate in the electoral district of Stony Plain and defeated Conservative incumbent Frederick Lundy and three other candidates winning just over half the popular vote to pick up the seat for his party. Washburn stood for a second term in office in the 1926 Alberta general election. He would face three other opponents including Lundy for the second time. On election night Washburn despite being at the head of the polls had lost almost 10% of his popular vote from the 1921 election and lacked a clear majority. William Hayes (Canadian Politician)
William Edgar Hayes (April 14, 1879 – April 2, 1939) was a provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta sitting with the governing Social Credit caucus from 1935 until his death in 1939. Political career Hayes ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1935 Alberta general election. He swept to power with almost 60% of the popular vote in the Stony Plain electoral district. He defeated three other candidates in the race including United Farmers incumbent Donald Macleod who finished a distant third. Hayes died on April 2, 1939, from a reported heart seizure late into his first term in office at his home in Stony Plain, Alberta. He was buried in a cemetery in Edmonton. The 1935 Alberta general election was held on August 22, 1935, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The newly founded Social Credit Party of Alberta won a sweeping victory, unseating the 14-year government of the United Farmers of Alberta. It was one of only five times that Alberta has changed governments. Premier John E. Brownlee had resigned on July 10, 1934, when he was sued and found liable for the seduction of a young clerk working in the Attorney-General's office. Although the verdict was immediately set aside by the presiding judge, the scandal seriously damaged the UFA's reputation among socially conservative Albertans. Provincial Treasurer Richard G. Reid succeeded him, but was unable to change the party's fortunes.
