Donald Cawley
Donald Francis Cawley (September 14, 1929 – September 21, 1990) was an American law enforcement officer who served as New York City Police Commissioner from May to December 1973. Early life Cawley was born on September 14, 1929, in Woodside, Queens. He studied engineering at Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn but dropped out due to a lack of money. Career Early career In 1951 he joined the New York City Police Department. He was promoted to sergeant in 1959. In 1961 he began working in the First Deputy Commissioner's office, where he specialized in investigating corruption. He remained in the First Deputy Commissioner's office where he climbed to the rank of deputy inspector. In 1971 he was appointed as an inspector in charge of the Sixth Division, which consisted of most of Harlem. In 1972, commissioner Patrick V. Woodside, Queens
Woodside is a residential and commercial neighborhood in the western portion of the borough of Queens in New York City. It is bordered on the south by Maspeth, on the north by Astoria, on the west by Sunnyside, and on the east by Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and East Elmhurst. Some areas are widely residential and very quiet, while other parts, especially the ones around Roosevelt Avenue, are busier. In the 19th century the area was part of the Town of Newtown (now Elmhurst). The adjacent area of Winfield was largely incorporated into the post office serving Woodside and as a consequence Winfield lost much of its identity distinct from Woodside. Michael Codd
Michael Joseph Codd (April 16, 1916 – August 29, 1985) was an American law enforcement officer who served as New York City Police Commissioner from 1974 to 1977. Early life Codd was born on April 16, 1916, in West New Brighton, Staten Island. He was one of ten children born to Mark and Elizabeth (McLoughlin) Codd, both Irish immigrants. After graduating from St. Peter's Boys High School, Codd worked in a grocery store and eventually became store manager. Career Early career Codd began his law enforcement career with the New York State Police in 1939. In 1941 he joined the New York City Police Department as a probationary officer in the West Side (Manhattan), 20th Precinct. Less than a year later he was drafted into the United States Army and served in the military police during World War II, rising to the rank of provost marshal for Western India. Abraham Beame
Abraham David Beame (March 20, 1906February 10, 2001) was the 104th mayor of New York City from 1974 to 1977. As mayor, he presided over the city during its fiscal crisis of the mid-1970s, when the city was almost forced to declare bankruptcy. Early life Beame was born Abraham David Birnbaum in London. His parents were Esther (née Goldfarb) and Philip Birnbaum, Jewish immigrants from Poland who fled Warsaw. Beame and his family left England when he was three months old. He was raised on New York City's Lower East Side. Clifford Glover was a 10-year-old African American boy who was fatally shot by Thomas Shea, an on-duty, undercover policeman, on April 28, 1973. Glover's death, and Shea's later acquittal for a murder charge, led to riots in the South Jamaica section of Queens, New York. Shooting At 5 a.m. on April 28, 1973, 10-year-old Clifford Glover was shot when he decided to join his stepfather for some work on a weekend and his stepfather was stopped by two undercover officers, Thomas Shea, and his partner Walter Scott. Massapequa (, ) is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on the South Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. It is considered the anchor community of the Greater Massapequa area. The population of the CDP was 21,685 at the time of the 2010 census.
