Don Thompson (musician)
Donald Winston Thompson, OC (born 18 January 1940) is a Canadian jazz icon who plays double bass, piano, and vibes. Thompson's career as a performer, recording artist, producer, session musician, and music educator has lasted for more than 50 years. One of Thompson's best-known musical associations was his membership in Paul Desmond's "Toronto Quartet" from 1974 to 1976, along with Ed Bickert and Jerry Fuller. Thompson also worked for several years in the 1970s and 1980s with guitarist Jim Hall. Thompson was also a member of Rob McConnell's Boss Brass for more than two decades starting in the late 1960s. From 2005 to the present, Thompson arranged and performed on all of singer Diana Panton's albums. Thompson first met Panton in the 1990s when he heard her sing as a high-school student, and he encouraged Panton to study at the Banff Centre, where he was one of her faculty instructors. Donald Thompson (fencer)
Donald Thompson (January 15, 1928 – February 26, 2013) was an American fencing, fencer. He competed in the team épée event at the 1948 Summer Olympics, but failed to reach the final. Thompson won the national épée title in 1953. He studied English at the University of Chicago and later headed the department of English at Wilbur Wright College in Chicago. He also established the English for Credit Program in Chicago. Thompson was a long-term member of the Art Institute of Chicago and a big admirer of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Sir Donald Thompson (3 November 1931 – 14 March 2005) was a British Conservative Party politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1979 until 1997. Thompson attended Trinity Academy, Halifax, and Hipperholme Grammar School. Following National service he ran a farm near Halifax then joined the family butcher business of his father, Geoff Thompson, known for its black puddings. His mother, Rachel, had worked as a weaver from the age of 12 until her marriage. Thompson expanded the business considerably and also developed a successful plastics manufacturing business. Thompson became involved in politics at a young age, setting up Halifax Young Conservatives. He became a county councillor for the West Riding from 1967, joining the new West Yorkshire county council in 1974, then Calderdale district council from 1975 until 1979. Donald Finlay Fergusson Thomson, OBE (26 June 1901 – 12 May 1970) was an Australian anthropologist and ornithologist who was largely responsible for turning the Caledon Bay crisis into a "decisive moment in the history of Aboriginal-European relations". He is remembered as a friend of the Yolngu people, and as a champion of understanding, by non-Indigenous Australians, of the culture and society of Indigenous Australians. Donald Thompson is a Canadian retired ice hockey forward who was an All-American for Michigan State. Career Thompson briefly played for the Niagara Falls Flyers in 1968–69 but soon left the team so he could register as a freshman at Michigan State University. In doing so, he would be able to count the year as his freshman season and begin to play as a sophomore on the varsity squad in 1970. Shortly after Thompson joined Michigan State, the NCAA changed its long-standing police to limit student athletes to three seasons of varsity play. Beginning with the 1969–70 season, all incoming players had four years of eligibility. As a consequence, when Thompson was named as the WCHA Sophomore of the Year for 1970, he was the final player to receive that award. Despite the lost season, Thompson became a standout player for the Spartans in the early-1970s. Don Cameron Thomson (born October 14, 1941) is an American water skier and a pioneer in the sport of barefoot skiing. He expanded early barefoot endurance records from 5 to over 30 minutes and introduced new maneuvers to the sport such as doubles barefooting, front to back and back to front turns, and participated in the development of the tumble turn with Terry Vance. Thomson was also a Master's rated 3 event skier, a proponent of water ski technology and of professional show skiing in the United States and Japan. He introduced backward barefooting to show skiing at Cypress Gardens in 1962, and was instrumental in the introduction of carbon fiber in molded skis, and the slalom fin. During the Vietnam war, where Thomson served as a Navy helicopter pilot with HA(L)-3, he was noted for water skiing and teaching other soldiers to water ski in river combat zones of Vietnam, and behind LST vessels in the Gulf of Thailand. Don Thompson (racewalker)
Donald James Thompson MBE (20 January 1933 – 3 October 2006) was an English racewalker. He was the only British man to win a gold medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics, in the 50 km walk. He also won a bronze medal at the 1962 European Championships, also for the 50 km walk. Thompson was born in Hillingdon, London and taught maths at Southland's comprehensive school, New Romney, from the mid 1970s. A small man, only 1.65m tall, he was originally a runner, but an injury to his Achilles' tendon forced him to take up race walking instead. He came second in the 52½ miles London to Brighton road race in 1954, and then won the event in each of the following eight years. He raced in the 50 km walk in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, but withdrew dehydrated after 45 km while in fifth place.
