Tyenna, Tasmania
Tyenna is a rural locality in the local government area (LGA) of Derwent Valley in the South-east LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about west of the town of New Norfolk. The 2016 census recorded a population of 43 for the state suburb of Tyenna. It is a settlement on the Tyenna River in Tasmania, located west of the state capital, Hobart and is currently but a remnant of a once thriving rural community. History Tyenna was gazetted as a locality in 1959. The name is believed to be an Aboriginal word for “Bandicoot”. Tyenna was mentioned as early as 1896, when Mr. T. Stephens presented a paper to the Royal Society of Tasmania on possible land routes to the west coast of the island. Many settlers had already settled and started to clear the heavy forest in the area when it was officially gazetted as a town in 1918. Early timber fellers established sawmills in the area. Tasmanian Legislative Council
The Tasmanian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. It is one of the two chambers of the Parliament, the other being the House of Assembly. Both houses sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. Members of the Legislative Council are often referred to as MLCs. The Legislative Council has 15 members elected using preferential voting in 15 single-member electorates. Each electorate has approximately the same number of electors. A review of Legislative Council division boundaries is required every 9 years; the most recent was completed in 2017. Election of members in the Legislative Council are staggered. Elections alternate between three divisions in one year and in two divisions the next year. Elections take place on the first Saturday in May. The term of each MLC is six years. Joseph Henry Dixon (19 March 1911 – 3 August 2002) was an Australian politician. He was born in York in England.
