''Don Juan Mateos'' is an oil on canvas painting widely attributed to Diego Velázquez created circa 1632–3. Background This work is widely attributed to Diego Velázquez and has been dated to 1632 or 1633. The portrait is referenced in 1685 among the assets of as "''ritratto di Monsu Velasco ..quale figura que ha le mani solo abbozzate''" or "portrait of Signor Velasco ... hands but roughly sketched". Sold as the work of Rubens in 1746 to Augustus III of Poland, it passed from his collection into the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, where for some time it was considered the work of Titian. The portrait, cut below the waist, wears black with golden highlights and a white collar. The hands, only outlined, rest the right on the hilt of a pistol the left on the sword. Diego Velázquez
Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (baptized June 6, 1599August 6, 1660) was a Spanish painter, the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, and of the Spanish Golden Age. He was an individualistic artist of the Baroque period (c.1600–1750). He began to paint in a precise tenebrist style, later developing a freer manner characterized by bold brushwork. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family and commoners, culminating in his masterpiece ''Las Meninas'' (1656). Velázquez's paintings became a model for 19th-century realist and impressionist painters. Jonathan Brown (art Historian)
Jonathan Mayer Brown (July 15, 1939 – January 17, 2022) was an American art historian, known for his work on Spanish art, particularly Diego Velázquez. He was Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor of Fine Arts at New York University. Early life and education Brown was born on July 15, 1939 in Springfield, Massachusetts to Leonard M. Brown, an insurance agent and Jean (Levy) Brown, a librarian. He studied Spanish literature at Dartmouth College and spent a year abroad in Madrid. While in Spain, he became fascinated with the painter Diego Velázquez, which inspired a lifelong interest in Spanish art. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1960 and continued on to Princeton University, where he received his PhD in 1964 with a dissertation titled "Painting in Seville from Francisco Pacheco, Pacheco to Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Murillo: A Study of Artistic Transition." Billon () is an alloy of a precious metal (most commonly silver, but also gold) with a majority base metal content (such as copper). It is used chiefly for making coins, medals, and token coins. The word comes from the French ''bille'', which means "log". History The use of billon coins dates from ancient Greece and continued through the Middle Ages. Pedro Perete, ( 16108 April 1639) was a seventeenth-century Baroque engraver and painter in Madrid. He was the son, and pupil, of engraver Peter Perret. Perete Hispanicized the family name from the Dutch "Perret". Many of his works have been attributed to or confused with those by his father. Background The son of Peter Perret and Isabel de Faria, it is believed he was born in Madrid in 1610, where his father was working for Philip III.
