Don Gaspar Historic District
The Don Gaspar Historic District is a historic district in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The listing included 278 contributing buildings. History The district is primarily residential, and was largely built up in the early-20th century, although it was apparently subdivided in the late 19th century, and at least a few of the buildings date from this earlier period. Architecture The oldest houses are one-story adobe structures. With It extends south from the State Capitol, and is part of the South Capitol area of Santa Fe. The northern boundary is Paseo de Peralta, the eastern boundary is the Old Santa Fe Trail, the southern boundary is Houghton Street, and the western boundary is Don Cubero. The mix of architectural styles includes California Bungalow, late-period Victorian and Pueblo Revival homes. Old Santa Fe Trail
The Santa Fe Trail was a 19th-century route through central North America that connected Franklin, Missouri, with Santa Fe, New Mexico. Pioneered in 1821 by William Becknell, who departed from the Boonslick region along the Missouri River, the trail served as a vital commercial highway until 1880, when the railroad arrived in Santa Fe. Santa Fe was near the end of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro which carried trade from Mexico City. The trail was later incorporated into parts of the National Old Trails Road and U.S. Route 66. The route skirted the northern edge and crossed the north-western corner of Comancheria, the territory of the Comanche. Realizing the value, they demanded compensation for granting passage to the trail. American traders envisioned them as another market. New Mexico Penitentiary
The Penitentiary of New Mexico (PNM) is a men's maximum-security prison located in unincorporated Santa Fe County, south of central Santa Fe, on New Mexico State Road 14. It is operated by the New Mexico Corrections Department. The complex consists of three separate facilities. The facilities are now referred to as Level V (opened 1985), Level VI (opened 1985) and Level II (opened 1990) for the minimum restrict facility, based upon the New Mexico adaptation of the Federal Bureau of Prisons system for inmate classification and restriction. The regular daily population is about 790 inmates, whose average age is 32. The Level VI Supermax site contains New Mexico's Death Row. This is where Terry Clark was executed in 2001. He remains, as of 2017, the only execution in New Mexico since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.
