Don Baum
Don Baum (1922–2008) was an American curator, artist and educator, most known as a key impresario and promoter of the Chicago Imagists, a group of artists that had an enduring impact on American art in the later twentieth century.Friedman, Anna. San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) was a private college of contemporary art in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1871, SFAI was one of the oldest art schools in the United States and the oldest west of the Mississippi River. Approximately 220 undergraduates and 112 graduate students were enrolled in 2021. The institution was accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), and was a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD). June Leaf
June Leaf (born 1929) is an American artist known for her abstract allegorical paintings and drawings; she also works in modernist kinetic sculpture. She is based in New York City and Mabou, Nova Scotia. Biography June Leaf was born in 1929 in Chicago, Illinois. She studied for three months between 1947 and 1948 at the Institute of Design (formerly known as the New Bauhaus), taking classes with artist Hugo Weber. She left school and traveled to Paris in 1948, focusing on creating and identifying abstraction and patterns in her work. In 1954, she returned to the school for her B.A. degree in Art Education from Roosevelt University and the same year her M.A. degree in Art Education at Institute of Design. Leaf returned to Paris in 1958–1959 with a Fulbright Grant for painting. When she returned, she moved to New York City in 1960. She married filmmaker and photographer, Robert Frank in 1971. George Cohen (artist)
George Marshall Cohen (August 4, 1919 – April 18, 1999) was an American painter and art professor. He was a member of the Chicago-based Monster Roster group of artists and taught art at Northwestern University. Early life and education Cohen was born on August 4, 1919, in Chicago. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he was awarded the Isaacs Scholarship in 1938–1939 and the Coolbaugh Scholarship in 1939–1940. He also served as the President of the Art Students League of New York in 1940. Cohen's academic career was interrupted between 1941 and 1946 while he served in the U.S. Army with the 63rd Reconnaissance Troop in the European Theatre of Operations. After completing his BFA at the Chicago Art Institute in 1946, Cohen briefly attended Drake University, where he studied Liberal Arts. Leon Golub
Leon Golub (January 23, 1922 – August 8, 2004) was an American painter. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, where he also studied, receiving his BA at the University of Chicago in 1942, and his BFA and MFA at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1949 and 1950, respectively. He was married to and collaborated with the artist Nancy Spero (August 24, 1926 – October 18, 2009). Their son Stephen Golub was an economics professor at Swarthmore College. Assemblage Art
Assemblage is an artistic form or medium usually created on a defined substrate that consists of three-dimensional elements projecting out of or from the substrate. It is similar to collage, a two-dimensional medium. It is part of the visual arts and it typically uses found objects, but is not limited to these materials. History The origin of the art form dates to the cubist constructions of Pablo Picasso c. 1912–1914. The origin of the word (in its artistic sense) can be traced back to the early 1950s, when Jean Dubuffet created a series of collages of butterfly wings, which he titled ''assemblages d'empreintes''. Irving Petlin
Irving Petlin (December 17, 1934 – September 1, 2018) was an American artist and painter renowned for his mastery of the pastel medium and collaborations with other artists (including Mark di Suvero and Leon Golub) and for his work in the "series form" in which he employed the raw materials of pastel, oil paint and unprimed linen, and found inspiration in the work of writers and poets including Primo Levi, Bruno Schulz, Paul Celan, Michael Palmer (poet), Michael Palmer and Edmond Jabès. Barbara Rossi (artist)
Barbara Rossi (born 1940) is a Chicago-based artist, one of the original Chicago Imagists, a group that in the 1960s and 1970s turned to representational art. She first exhibited with them at the Hyde Park Art Center in 1969. She is known for meticulously rendered drawings and cartoonish paintings, as well as a personal vernacular. She works primarily by making reverse paintings on plexiglass that reference lowbrow and outsider art. She is a teacher at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her works are exhibited in several permanent art museum collections. Life and career Rossi was born in Chicago in 1940, and lives in Berwyn, Illinois. She received her Bachelor of Arts from St. Xavier College in 1964. Before pursuing her career as an artist, she spent several years as a Catholic nun.
