Domo (NHK)
is the official mascot of Japan's public broadcaster NHK, appearing in several 30-second stop-motion Interstitial program, interstitial sketches, which are shown as station identification in between the channel's Television programming, programming. The character is a furry monster that is boxy and brown and often has his big mouth wide open. Origin Domo-kun first appeared in short stop-motion sketches on December 22, 1998, to mark the 10th anniversary of NHK's satellite broadcasting. The name "Domo" was acquired during the second episode of his show, in which a TV announcer said , which is a greeting that can be translated as "Well, hello there!", but which can also be interpreted as "Hello, Domo", and thus is a convenient pun (''dajare''). ''Domo TV'' is a stop-motion animated children's short television series produced by NHK and Nickelodeon's Nicktoons network. The series consists of 26 two-minute episodes that were aired on Nicktoons in the United States and on Nickelodeon networks internationally. It was the Nickelodeon brand's first anime project and the second series after ''Kappa Mikey'' to be branded as a Nicktoons Network original program. Source material The series is based on Domo, a Japanese mascot character who had previously appeared in many short commercials for the NHK channel. Premise The series follows Domo and his friends—Mr. Usaji the rabbit, Tashanna the weasel, and two bats named Maya and Mario—on simple adventures devoid of dialogue. Domo is an experimental robot made by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology designed to interact with humans. The brainchild of Jeff Weber and Aaron Edsinger, cofounders of Meka Robotics, its name comes from the Japanese language, Japanese phrase for "thank you very much", ''domo arigato'', as well as the Styx (band), Styx song, "Mr. Roboto". The Domo project was originally funded by NASA, and has now been joined by Toyota in funding robot's development.
