Domingo Ramón (explorer)
José Domingo Ramón (?-December 23, 1723) was a Spanish military man and explorer who founded several missions and a presidio in East Texas to prevent French expansion in the area. Biography Domingo Ramón was born to Diego Ramón, a soldier who served as commander of the Presidio San Juan Bautista in Coahuila, in the modern Mexico. In 1715, Ramón was appointed commander of a Spanish expedition whose purpose was to go to East Texas. The objective of the expedition was the foundation of four religious missions, as well as a presidio to prevent French expansion from Louisiana. The expedition, led by the Quebecer official commander Louis Juchereau de St. Denis, began its journey in San Juan Bautista (present-day Guerrero, Coahuila) on April 12, 1716 and was made up by seventy-five members (among them twelve friars, including Isidro de Espinosa, and more than twenty civilians). Little River (Texas)
The Little River is a river in Central Texas in the Brazos River watershed. It is formed by the confluence of the Leon River and the Lampasas River near Little River, Texas in Bell County. It flows generally southeast for until it empties into the Brazos River about southwest of Hearne, at a site called Port Sullivan in Milam County. The Little River has a third tributary, the San Gabriel River, which joins the Little about north of Rockdale and five miles southwest of Cameron. Mission Concepcion
Franciscan Friars established Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de Acuña (also Mission Concepción) in 1711 as Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de los Hainais in East Texas. The mission was by the Domingo Ramón- St. Denis expedition and was originally meant to be a base for converting the Hasinai to Catholicism and teaching them what they needed to know to become Spanish citizens. The friars moved the mission in 1731 to San Antonio. After its relocation most of the people in the mission were Pajalats who spoke a Coahuiltecan language. Catholic Mass is still held at the mission every Sunday. On October 28, 1835, Mexican troops under Colonel Domingo de Ugartechea and Texian insurgents led by James Bowie and James Fannin fought the '' Battle of Concepción'' here. Historian J.R. Mission San Francisco De La Espada
Mission San Francisco de la Espada (also Mission Espada) is a Roman Rite Catholic mission established in 1690 by Spain and relocated in 1731 to present-day San Antonio, Texas, in what was then known as northern New Spain. The mission was built in order to convert local Native Americans to Christianity and solidify Spanish territorial claims in the New World against encroachment from France. Today, the structure is one of four missions that comprise San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. Antonio Margil
Antonio Margil, OFM (18 August 1657 – 6 August 1726) was a Spanish Franciscan missionary in North and Central America. Life Margil entered the Franciscan Order in his Native city of Valencia, Spain on 22 April 1673. After his ordination to the priesthood, he volunteered for the Native American missions and arrived at Vera Cruz on 6 June 1683. He was stationed at the missionary college of Santa Cruz, Querétaro, but was generally engaged in reaching missions in Yucatan, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and especially in Guatemala. He always walked barefooted, without sandals, fasted every day in the year, never used meat or fish, and applied the discipline and other instruments of penance to himself unmercifully. The New Philippines ( es, Nuevas Filipinas or ) was the abbreviated name of a territory in New Spain. Its full and official name was . The territory was named in honor of its sovereign, King Philip V of Spain. The ultimate demise of the New Philippines as a legal entity was coterminous with the extinction of New Spain in 1821. Nacono
The Nacono were a Native American tribe from eastern Texas. Today they are part of the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma, a federally recognized tribe in Oklahoma. Comal Springs
Comal Springs ( ) are the largest concentration of naturally occurring freshwater springs in Texas. They are located in the city of New Braunfels and are the result of water percolating through the Edwards Aquifer formation. History The springs were historically a magnet for the indigenous population of the region, often Tonkawas. The first Spanish explorer to visit the springs was Damián Massanet in 1691. The site was later home to a Spanish mission. Spanish settlers eventually called the site "Las Fontanas". Rosillo Creek
Rosillo Creek begins approximately 0.5 miles north of FM 1976, in northeastern Bexar County, Texas, within the city limits of Windcrest, Texas, and flows southwestward for 18 miles through the Rosillo Creek Basin. The creek has an elevation ranging from 265 meters above sea level, to 155 meters above sea level. The vegetation of the basin is mostly mesquite trees and grasses. Cibolo Creek
Cibolo Creek is a stream in South Central Texas that runs approximately from its source at Turkey Knob (in the Texas Hill Country) near Boerne, Texas, to its confluence with the San Antonio River in Karnes County. The creek is a tributary of the San Antonio River, at the easternmost part of its watershed. The stream is used for both recreational and cartographic purposes, serving as the eastern boundary of Bexar County, Texas.
