Domenico Cantatore
Domenico Cantatore ( Ruvo di Puglia 16 March 1906 – Paris 22 May 1998) was an Italian painter, mosaic artist and illustrator. His style, somewhat naive, is influenced by Cezanne, Matisse, and the Expressionists. His main focus was portraiture and the exploration of historical themes, in particular the figure of the reclining odalisques. Biography Domenico Cantatore was born in Ruvo di Puglia in Apulia. He was the younger of eight siblings. In 1922 he moved to Rome, and from there in 1924 to Milan, where he began to paint. In Milan he befriended the art critic Raffaele Carrieri and collector Margherita Sarfatti. In 1929 he had his first solo show at Galleria Milano, where his work was praised by Carlo Carrà. In 1932, Cantatore moved to Paris, where he befriended Henri Matisse and Amedeo Modigliani. Giuseppe Migneco
Giuseppe Migneco (1908–1997) was an Italian painter of the Novecento Italiano. He often painted scenes of laborers at work in a naïve and expressionist style. Biography Migneco was born in Messina. His father was a train station master and his mother was a school teacher. He grew up in the neighbourhood of Ponteschiavo. At the age of 23, he moved to Milan to enroll in the International Medical School, University of Milan, but started gravitating around the local art scene, where he met Renato Birolli, Raffaele De Grada, Beniamino Joppolo and Aligi Sassu. Migneco eventually landed a job as an illustrator for the weekly magazine for children ''Corriere dei Piccoli''. He lost interest in his medical studies, and decided to be a painter. In 1937, he helped founding the anti-fascist ''Corrente'' group, a movement affiliated with the journal ''Corrente di Vita'', and participates in the group's exhibitions. Pontedera
Pontedera (; la, Pons Herae) is an italian comune with a population of 29.270 inhabitants, located in the province of Pisa, Tuscany, Central Italy, central Italy. The town is located 20 km (12 miles) from Pisa and 50 km (31 miles) from Florence. It houses the headquarters of the Piaggio company, of the Castellani (wine), Castellani winery and of the Amedei premium artisan chocolate factory. Pontedera is in the Arno Valley at the confluence of the Era River and the Arno River. Its territory is also crossed by the Scolmatore dell'Arno canal, and by the Roglio, a tributary of the Era. Enzo Carli (art Historian)
Enzo Carli (20 August 1910 - 26 September 1999) was an Italian art historian and art critic. Life Born in Pisa, he studied at the University of Pisa under Mario Salmi and Matteo Marangoni. His graduation thesis was on the sculptor Tino di Camaino (1285-1337). In 1937 he was made superintendent of Aquila and two years later moved to Siena, where he taught art history at the University of Siena and was director of the Pinacoteca Nazionale until 1952 and of the Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana del Duomo until 1973. In 1980 he received the President of the Republic's Prize as a member emeritus of the Accademia dei Lincei. In 1995 that Accademia awarded him the Feltrinelli Prize for art criticism and poetry. He died in Siena and is buried in Pisa's Camposanto monumentale. The Basilica of San Domenico, also known as Basilica Cateriniana, is a basilica church in Siena, Tuscany, Italy, one of the most important in the city. Overview The church was begun in 1226–1265, but was enlarged in the 14th century resulting in the Gothic appearance it has now. However, aspects of the Gothic structure were subsequently destroyed by fires in 1443, 1456 and 1531, and further damage later resulted from military occupation (1548–1552). It is a large edifice built, like many contemporary edifices of the mendicant orders, in bricks, with a lofty bell tower on the left (this was reduced in height after an earthquake in 1798). The interior is on the Egyptian cross plan with a huge nave covered by trusses and with a transept featuring high chapels.
