Domantas Stankūnas
Domantas Stankūnas (born 10 June 2000) is a Lithuanian rower. He competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the men’s coxless pair. Early and personal life His twin brother Dovydas Stankūnas is also a rower. Career He won silver at the 2021 World Rowing U23 Championships in the coxless pair, held in the Czech Republic, competing alongside his brother Dovydas. That year, they won gold at the 2021 European Rowing U23 Championships in Poland. They won silver at the 2022 World Rowing U23 Championships in Italy. They retained their European title at the 2022 European Rowing U23 Championships in Belgium. In May 2024, they qualified for the Paris Olympics at the qualifying regatta in Lucerne. Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys. The men's coxless pair event at the 2024 Summer Olympics took place from 28 July to 2 August 2024 at the Stade nautique de Vaires-sur-Marne, National Olympic Nautical Stadium of Île-de-France in Vaires-sur-Marne. Background This was the 26th appearance of the event, which has been held at every Summer Olympics since 1904 with the exception of 1912. Qualification Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) has been limited to a single boat (one rower) in the event since 1976. Competition format This rowing event is a coxless pair event, meaning that each boat is propelled by two rowers. The "coxless" portion means that there is no coxswain. Each rower has one oar. The course uses the 2000 metres distance that became the Olympic standard in 1912. During the first round three heats were held.
