Dolwyddelan Railway Station
Dolwyddelan railway station is a passenger station in the Lledr Valley, Wales, on the Conwy Valley Line from Llandudno Junction to Blaenau Ffestiniog, which is operated by Transport for Wales Rail. It is located at Pentre-Bont across the river a few hundred yards from the centre of Dolwyddelan. The station is unmanned. History During the 1980s and 1990s a narrow-gauge train was displayed on the station platform. The locomotive was gauge Hunslet 2209, on loan from the Gloddfa Ganol railway museum. Facilities The platform used to be an island platform as there was a passing loop on the west side. There used to be a substantial station building on the platform and a footbridge up to the road bridge. Both have now been removed and only remaining building is a standard waiting shelter. Dolwyddelan
Dolwyddelan ( ; ; ) – in Victorian times, often spelled Dolyddelen – is a village and community in Conwy county borough, Wales, on the main A470 road between Blaenau Ffestiniog and Betws-y-Coed. As a community, the population of Dolwyddelan was recorded in the 2001 Census as 427, and 55.8% of those residents could speak Welsh. The population increased to 474 in the 2011 census with the proportion of Welsh speakers falling to 50.8%. Name The spelling of the village's name has varied over the years, though there appear to be two primary spellings with two primary meanings. The common modern spelling "Dolwyddelan" is translated as "Gwyddelan's meadow", referring to Saint Gwyddelan, an Irish missionary of the 6th century, after whom the parish church is named. Gloddfa Ganol
Gloddfa Ganol (also known as the Gloddfa Ganol Mountain Center) was a museum dedicated to the Welsh slate industry and narrow-gauge railways, situated in the Oakeley slate quarry in Blaenau Ffestiniog. It opened in 1974 and closed in 1998 following an auction of its exhibits. Gloddfa Ganol Mountain Center The Oakeley slate quarry was the largest underground slate mine in the world, but it suffered from a sharp decline in worldwide demand for slate after the Second World War. As quarrying declined in the 1970s, the owners sought to diversify to serve the growing tourist trade in Wales. In 1974 the abandoned Middle Quarry was re-opened, producing architectural slab, and as an attraction to the public - the Gloddfa Ganol Mountain Center. Pont-y-Pant railway station is a single platform passenger station in the Lledr Valley, Wales, on the Conwy Valley line from Llandudno Junction to Blaenau Ffestiniog, which is operated by Transport for Wales Rail. The station house is well maintained and used as a private dwelling. History The station was opened on 22 July 1879 when the London and North Western Railway opened an extension of the Conwy Valley line from to . The station was the loading point for slate from the Rhiw-goch quarry on the opposite side of the valley. The slate was brought across the river by carts which crossed a substantially built bridge. The bridge is not shown on the 1888 OS Six-inch map but it is on the 1901 edition. Both maps show sidings to the north of the station on the eastern side of the line. The Hunslet Engine Company is a locomotive-building company, founded in 1864 in Hunslet, England. It manufactured steam locomotives for over 100 years and currently manufactures diesel shunting locomotives. The company is part of Ed Murray & Sons.
