Dokdo-class Amphibious Assault Ship
The ''Dokdo''-class amphibious assault ship (, ) is a class of landing platform helicopter (LPH) amphibious assault ships operated by the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN). Designed and built by Hanjin Heavy Industries (HHIC), the amphibious landing ships were meant to enhance South Korea's amphibious operation capability, both in terms of assault and military operations other than war (MOOTW). Development The ROK Navy required a versatile landing ship with amphibious capabilities in its program to build a blue-water navy. In the end, Hanjin's ''Dokdo'' design was chosen to fulfill this need. The—also built by HHIC—was chosen as the landing craft air cushion (LCAC) to operate from the ship. Landing Ship Tank
Landing Ship, Tank (LST), or tank landing ship, is the naval designation for ships first developed during World War II (1939–1945) to support amphibious operations by carrying tanks, vehicles, cargo, and landing troops directly onto shore with no docks or piers. This enabled amphibious assaults on almost any beach. The LST had a highly specialized design that enabled ocean crossings as well as shore groundings. Military operations other than war (MOOTW) focus on deterring war, resolving conflict, promoting peace, and supporting civil authorities in response to domestic crises. The phrase and acronym were coined by the United States military during the 1990s, but it has since fallen out of use.
