Doing God's Work – A Creation Compilation
''Doing God's Work – A Creation Compilation'' is a various artists compilation album of British indie music released in 1987 by Creation Records. The album was released in vinyl and CD format. Background It is with ''Doing God's Work'' that Creation "demonstrates the label's first signs of branching out sonically," says Andy Kellman at '' AllMusic'', "such that the label no longer remained a rumpus room for '' Nuggets'' fans." Artists Phil Wilson remembers that in 1987 Alan McGee wanted Creation to be the UK equivalent of the Elektra label, "and he reckoned I could be Creation's Country Joe." Wilson's band The June Brides had in 1986 supported The Smiths on tour, and Anthony Strutt at ''Penny Black Music'' felt "Ten Miles" had "the flame of the Smiths burning brightly in the background". Biff Bang Pow! may have "played second fiddle to McGee's work promoting the other bands on his label", but his own band produced "a well-rounded, exciting and accomplished work" i ...

One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Independent labels such as Flying Nun Records, Flying Nun began to promote the scene across New Zealand, inspiring key college rock bands in the United States such as Pavement (band), Pavement, Pixies (band), Pixies and R.E.M. Other notable scenes grew in Madchester, Manchester and Hamburger Schule, Hamburg, with many others thriving thereafter. In the 1980s, the use of the term "independent music, indie" (or " ...

The Byrds
The Byrds () were an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1964. The band underwent multiple lineup changes throughout its existence, with frontman Roger McGuinn (known as Jim McGuinn until mid-1967) remaining the sole consistent member. Although their time as one of the most popular groups in the world only lasted for a short period in the mid-1960s, the Byrds are today considered by critics to be among the most influential rock acts of their era. Their signature blend of clear harmony singing and McGuinn's jangly 12-string Rickenbacker guitar was "absorbed into the vocabulary of rock" and has continued to be influential. Initially, the Byrds pioneered the musical genre of folk rock as a popular format in 1965, by melding the influence of the Beatles and other British Invasion bands with contemporary and traditional folk music on their first and second albums, and the hit singles " Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Turn! Turn! Turn!". As the 1960s progressed, ...

Jangle Pop
Jangle pop is a subgenre of pop rock or college rock that emphasizes jangly guitars and 1960s-style pop melodies. The term originated from Bob Dylan's song " Mr. Tambourine Man", whose 1965 rendition by the Byrds became considered one of the genre's representative works. Since the 1960s, jangle pop has crossed numerous genres, including power pop, psychedelia, new wave, post-punk, and lo-fi. In the 1980s, the most prominent bands of early indie rock were jangle pop groups such as R.E.M., the Wedding Present, and the Smiths. In the early to mid 1980s, the term "jangle pop" emerged as a label for an American post-punk movement that recalled the sounds of "jangly" acts from the 1960s. Between 1983 and 1987, the description "jangle pop" was used to describe bands like R.E.M. and Let's Active as well as the Paisley Underground subgenre, which incorporated psychedelic influences. Etymology The term "jangle pop" was not used during the original movement of the 1960s, but was p ...

Fontana Records
Fontana Records is a record label that was started in the 1950s as a subsidiary of the Dutch Philips Records. The independent label distributor Fontana Distribution takes its name from the label. It appeared in many 1988 critics' lists in ''NME'', ''Melody Maker'' and ''Sounds''. Her only appearance on the album was playing guitar and singing backing vocals on the song "Christine" (the first song which group leader Guy Chadwick had written for The House of Love and had inspired the blueprint for the band's original lineup and style). Although the split was amicable, Chadwick would later comment "Losing Andrea Heukamp was a massive, massive blow for me: I loved her voice and I loved her playing, she was easily as important as Pete (Evans), Terry (Bickers) or Chris (Groothuizen)."Sleevenotes for the 2007 Renascent reissue of ''The House of Love'' Despite th ...
