Dogs At Polling Stations
Dogs at polling stations or #dogsatpollingstations is a popular hashtag and Internet meme on social media during an election in the UK and other countries such as Australia. Typically, the dogs are photographed waiting for their owners outside the polling station and the pictures then posted on services such as Instagram or Twitter. The hashtag became popular in the UK general elections of 2015 and 2017. The 2019 United Kingdom general election was held in December and thus many of the photographs had a seasonal theme such as showing the dog wearing a Santa hat. Politicians who participated included Boris Johnson, with his dog Dilyn, and Sadiq Khan with his Labrador, Luna. Ed Davey posted a picture of his family's guinea pig, Carrot, as they do not have a dog. Other animals, such as horses, also made appearances. Dilyn
Dilyn is a dog which lived with former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie during their time at 10 Downing Street. He is a white, male Jack Russell cross and was born in 2018. The dog was rescued as a puppy from a breeder in South Wales by Friends of Animals Wales because he had a misaligned jaw and was going to be put down. The charity gave initial care to the puppy and named it "Dilyn", the Welsh word for "follow", in memory of a spaniel which had recently died. The puppy was then fostered in Merthyr Tydfil for a few weeks before being adopted by Johnson and Symonds in 2019. A Santa suit is a suit worn by a person portraying the legendary character Santa Claus. The modern American version of the suit can be attributed to the work of Thomas Nast for ''Harper's Weekly'' magazine, although it is often incorrectly thought that Haddon Sundblom designed the suit in his advertising work for The Coca-Cola Company.
