Dodge County School District
The Dodge County School District is a public school district in Dodge County, Georgia, United States, based in Eastman. It serves the communities of Chauncey, Chester, Eastman, Milan, and Rhine. History In December 1977 Dahl McDermitt was second place in a special election to be the superintendent, with 2,069 votes, while E. M. "Pete" McDuffie, previously a member of the Georgia Senate, got 2,176 votes. Another candidate got 1,552 votes. McDuffie dropped out of the race, and in a runoff election in January 1978, McDermitt won, taking 3,209 votes while his opponent, the third place holder from the 1977 special election, had 2,834 votes. Eastman, Georgia
Eastman is a city in Dodge County, Georgia, United States. The population was 4,962 at the 2010 census. Named after one of the founders who contributed a site and paid for the county courthouse, the city was established in 1871, and is the county seat of Dodge County. In the 19th century, this was a center of the timber and sawmill industry. During the Great Depression in 1937, the first Stuckey's Pecan Shoppe, once well-known along roadways throughout the United States, was founded in Eastman. History The first permanent settlement of the area took place in 1840. The population continued to grow when, in 1869, a station was built for the newly constructed Macon and Brunswick Railroad which passed through the area, stimulating an economic boom. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) is an educational accreditor recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Dodge County is a county located in the central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of 2010, the population was 21,796. The county seat is Eastman. Dodge County lies in the Historic South and Black Belt region of Georgia, an area that was devoted to cotton production in the antebellum years. It has significant historic buildings and plantations, has a substantial African-American population, and shows cultural aspects of the South. History Prior to 1802, this section of Georgia was owned by the Creek Indians. Treaties were made in 1802-1805 by which all lands east of the Ocmulgee River were taken from the Creek Indians. This land was distributed by lottery to the citizens of Georgia. In 1803 Wilkinson County was organized under that treaty. Telfair and Laurens counties were formed from Wilkinson County. Chauncey is a city in Dodge County, Georgia, United States. The population was 342 at the 2010 census. It was formed around station number twelve on the Macon and Brunswick Railroad. History The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the "Town of Chauncey" in 1883. The community was named after William Chauncey, a businessperson in the local lumber industry. Chester is a town in Dodge County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,596 at the 2010 census, up from 305 in 2000, due to inclusion of Dodge State Prison within the town limits. History The town takes its name from Chester, New York. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the place in 1902 as the "Town of Chester", with municipal corporate limits extending in a one-mile radius from the Wrightsville and Tennille Railroad depot. Milan, Georgia
Milan ( ) is a city in Dodge and Telfair counties in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 700 at the 2010 census, down from 1,012 in 2000. History Milan was founded in the 1880s when the railroad was extended to that point. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Milan as a town in 1891. The city was named after Milan, in Italy. On May 25, 1919, at the age of 72, a black man named Berry Washington defended two young black girls who were attacked by two drunken white men. A mob of 75 to 100 white men hung him from a post, then shot his corpse to pieces. In spite of a $1,000 reward offered by Governor Dorsey, no one was ever arrested. Macon ( ), officially Macon–Bibb County, is a consolidated city-county in the U.S. state of Georgia. Situated near the fall line of the Ocmulgee River, it is located southeast of Atlanta and lies near the geographic center of the state of Georgia—hence the city's nickname, "The Heart of Georgia".
