__NOTOC__ The Doblhoff/WNF 342 was the first helicopter to take off and land using tip jets to drive the rotor. Development The WNF 342 was designed for a German Navy requirement for an observation platform for use from small ships and submarines. The conventional piston engine drove both a small propeller (to provide airflow across a rudder) and an air compressor to provide air (subsequently mixed with fuel) through the rotor head and hollow rotor blades to combustion chambers at the rotor tips. Variants V1/V2: The first helicopter was initially powered by a engine (V1) and then a engine (V2)—both by Walter Mikron. It first flew in 1943, and was captured with V4 at Zell am See. The ''Illustrated Encyclopedia of Aircraft'' was a weekly partwork magazine by Aerospace Publishing (an imprint of Orbis Publishing) which was published in the United Kingdom (and sold in other countries too) during the early 1980s. The magazine was intended to eventually make up a multi-volume encyclopedia dedicated to aviation. First issued in 1981, the partwork comprised 216 issues, each of twenty pages (plus the covers), making up eighteen volumes (4280 pages). The first two issues were sold together for the price of one, subsequent issues were sold on their own. Empty binders for each volume (of twelve issues) were also sold. These binders were dark blue in colour and contained the imprint of a Panavia Tornado on the front. USS ''Winjah'' (CVE-54) (originally AVG-54, later ACV-54), was a of the United States Navy, leased to the Royal Navy during World War II. ''Winjah'' was laid down on 5 June 1943 at Tacoma, Washington, by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding. She was assigned to the United Kingdom under lend-lease on 23 June; she was redesignated CVE-54 on 15 July; launched on 22 November; and delivered to the British on 18 February 1944. From March to August 1945 she was part of the British Pacific Fleet attached to the 30th Aircraft Carrier Squadron. Renamed HMS ''Reaper'' (D82), the carrier operated in the Royal Navy for the duration of World War II.
