Sikkim Legislative Assembly
The Sikkim Legislative Assembly is the unicameral state legislature of Sikkim States and territories of India, state in north-eastern India. The seat of the Legislative Assembly is at Gangtok, the capital of the Sikkim state. History Sikkim became the 22nd state of India by the Thirty-sixth Amendment of the Constitution of India, 36th Amendment of the Indian Constitution in 1975. Athup Lepcha is an Indian politician and environmental activist. He is the vice president of Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) and the president of " Affected Citizens of Teesta" (ACT), Non-governmental organization for environment and biodiversity. Political career In 1979 Sikkim Legislative Assembly election, Athup Lepcha stood as a candidate of Sikkim Janata Parishad (SJP) from Djongu Constituency. He won and beat the candidate of Janata Party, incumbent chief minister of Sikkim, Kazi Lhendup Dorjee. Athup Lepcha appointed to the State Minister for Forest and Environment in Nar Bahadur Bhandari ministry. In 1984, Athup Lepcha became one of the leaders of anti-Bhandari, and denounced the corruption of Bhandari. Bhandari ousted Athup Lepcha from his political party. Sikkim Sangram Parishad
Sikkim Sangram Parishad is a regional political party in the Indian state of Sikkim. In 1979, after a period of instability, a ministry headed by Nar Bahadur Bhandari from Sikkim Janata Parishad party gained power in Sikkim. In 1984, Bhandari dissolved Sikkim Janata Parishad and formed a new party called Sikkim Sangram Parishad. Sikkim Sangram Parishad held on to power in the 1984 and 1989 elections, but after that lost to Sikkim Democratic Front, which has swept the elections since 1999. Sikkim Sangram Parishad did not win any seats in the state assembly in the 2004 elections. Nar Bahadur Bhandari has merged Sikkim Sangram Parishad with the Indian National Congress and he became the president of the Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC). Sikkim Janata Parishad or SJP (Sikkim Popular Association) was a political party in the Indian state of Sikkim led by N.B. Bhandari. SJP won the state assembly elections 1979, when it got 22,776 votes (31,49%) and won 17 seats (had candidates in 31 out of total of 32). Bhandari became the Chief Minister. In 1981 SJP merged with Indian National Congress. However, in 1984 Bhandari split from Congress and founded Sikkim Sangram Parishad. Bhutia-Lepcha
Bhuta-Lepcha is an ethnic grouping consisting of people of the Bhutia and Lepcha communities in Sikkim, India. Both these groups are listed as Scheduled Tribes by the Government of India. After the implementation of the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission, in 2002, 12 (out of 32) seats have been reserved for this group in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly. Reservation within Sikkim Reservation for the Bhutia-Lepcha (BL) people started with the 1953 Sikkimese general election with six (out of 18) seats reserved in the Sikkim State Council. This was changed to seven (out of 24) seats by the time of the 1970 Sikkimese general election. The reservation was further increased to 15 (out of 32) seats in the first election to be based on universal suffrage in 1974. As of 2006, there are 12 seats (out of 32) reserved for the BL in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly. Sikkim (Lok Sabha Constituency)
Sikkim Lok Sabha constituency is a Lok Sabha (lower house of the Indian parliament) constituency which covers the entire area of the state of Sikkim. Sikkim participated in its first general elections in 1977 after joining the Union in 1975. Its first member of parliament (MP) was Chatra Bahadur Chhetri of the Indian National Congress who was elected unopposed. The current MP is Indra Hang Subba, who has represented the constituency since 2019. His term is expected to end in May 2024.
