Dixon, as is common in England, or Dickson, is a patronymic surname, traditionally Scottish and thought to have originated upon the birth of the son of Richard Keith, son of Hervey de Keith, Earl Marischal of Scotland, and Margaret, daughter of the 3rd Lord of Douglas. Dixon is a city and the county seat of Lee County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,733 as of the 2010 census, down from 15,941 in 2000. The city is named after founder John Dixon, who operated a rope ferry service across the Rock River, which runs through the city. Dixon, also known as Dixon's Plantation, was a privately owned historic plantation house (1793-2021) in King and Queen County, Virginia on the Mattaponi River—a tributary of the York River in one of Virginia's historic slavery-dependent tobacco-growing regions. The property was situated between the two unincorporated communities of Shacklefords and King and Queen Court House, Virginia. Dated (by tree-rings) to 1793, the plantation's surviving central residence was a two-story, five bay, symmetrical frame house with a gambrel roof, brick foundation and brick end-walls—the latter featuring Flemish bond and internal (rather than expressed) chimneys. Dixon is an unincorporated community located in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States, on New Mexico State Road 75, just east of New Mexico State Road 68, in the north-central part of the state, and is approximately southwest of Taos. The elevation of Dixon is above sea level. It is on the banks of the Embudo Creek, a tributary of the Rio Grande. Embudo Creek flows into the Rio Grande downstream from Dixon. The town is home to the largest population of organic farmers in the state, as well as several wineries.
