Dixie Union (horse)
Dixie Union (March 7, 1997 – July 14, 2010) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse whose wins included two Grade I stakes . He was also a successful sire whose progeny included Grade 1 winners Hot Dixie Chick, Dixie Chatter, and 2012 Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags. Dixie Union was bred by Seattle, Washington businessman and former NBA team owner Herman Sarkowsky, who raced him in partnership with Gerald Ford's Diamond A Racing Corp. His sire was Dixieland Band, the 2004 Leading broodmare sire in North America. His dam was She's Tops, the 1992 winner of the Grade II Railbird Stakes who was a daughter of the 1986 American Champion Two-Year-Old Colt, Capote. Trained by U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee Richard Mandella, at age two Dixie Union won three important stakes races in California. Dixieland Band (1980 – April 7, 2010) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Background Dixieland Band was bred by Bayard Sharp, a prominent and highly respected Delaware horseman and president of The Blood-Horse Inc. Out of the Sharp-owned multiple stakes winning mare, Mississippi Mud, he was a son of the 20th century's most influential sire, Northern Dancer. Racing career In May 1983, Dixieland Band won the Pennsylvania Derby by a neck from Jacques Tip, establishing himself as a contender for the Belmont Stakes. In the Belmont, he finished unplaced behind Caveat. At age four, he won June's Massachusetts Handicap by two and a quarter lengths from Ward Off Trouble. Hot Dixie Chick (foaled March 31, 2007) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Hot Dixie Chick was foaled on March 31, 2007, at Gerry Dilger's Dromoland Farm near Lexington, Kentucky. She was sired by Dixie Union, a son of the stakes winner Dixieland Band, and she is out of the mare Above Perfection, by the Irish-bred stallion In Excess, making her a half sister to 2017 Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming. Monmouth Park Racetrack is an American race track for thoroughbred horse racing in Oceanport, New Jersey, United States. It is owned by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority and is operated under a five-year lease as a partnership with Darby Development, LLC. Monmouth Park's marquee event is the Haskell Invitational, named after Amory L. Haskell. The Haskell was first run in 1968 as a handicap, but was made into an Invitational Handicap in 1981. National Museum Of Racing And Hall Of Fame
The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame was founded in 1950 in Saratoga Springs, New York, to honor the achievements of American Thoroughbred race horses, jockeys, and trainers. In 1955, the museum moved to its current location on Union Avenue near Saratoga Race Course, at which time inductions into the hall of fame began. Each spring, following the tabulation of the final votes, the announcement of new inductees is made, usually during Kentucky Derby Week in early May. The American Champion Two-Year-Old Male Horse is an American Thoroughbred horse racing honor awarded annually in Thoroughbred flat racing. It became part of the Eclipse Awards program in 1971. The award originated in 1936 when the ''Daily Racing Form'' (DRF) began naming an annual champion. In the same year, the Baltimore-based ''Turf and Sports Digest'' magazine instituted a similar award. Starting in 1950, the Thoroughbred Racing Associations (TRA) began naming its own champion. The Angels Flight Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Santa Anita Park in Inglewood, California. A Grade III event open to three-year-old fillies, it is contested on dirt over a distance of a six and one-half furlongs.
