Dixie County Middle High School is located at 17924 SE 19 HWY in Cross City, Florida, United States. It is a part of Dixie District Schools, which serves Dixie County. The school changed its name in 2021 from Dixie County High School, due to the school now including grades 8–12. Students grades 6–7 in Dixie County are still taught at Ruth Raines Middle School. The school's teams are known as the Bears and Lady Bears. Sports include: football, softball, basketball, baseball, weight lifting, and soccer. Dixie County is a county located in the Big Bend region of the northern part of the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,759. Its county seat is Cross City. Eugene McDowell
Eugene McDowell (December 31, 1963 – August 24, 1995) was an American professional basketball player. A strong big man who primarily played as a center, he was one of the top prospects in the 1981 high school class. He was a 4-year starter playing college basketball for the Florida Gators, and he was a 3rd-round pick in the 1985 NBA Draft; however, he never played in the NBA and he had a 7-year career playing professional basketball in Europe (Italy, Spain and Turkey) and in the CBA. He died in 1995 of an enlarged heart. He was inducted in the SEC Hall of Fame in 2009. High school career McDowell was born in Cross City, Florida, and at birth the doctors found his leg bones to be too soft to correctly sustain his body, and they had him use braces in order to move: the physicians predicted that he would not be able to walk without them. Nick Collins
Nicholas Cordell Collins (born August 16, 1983) is a former American football safety who played seven seasons for the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Bethune-Cookman, and was drafted by the Packers in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft. Collins led the league in interceptions returned for touchdowns and interception return yards in the 2008 season. In Super Bowl XLV, he intercepted Ben Roethlisberger for a touchdown as the Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, 31–25. In 2011, Collins suffered a career-ending neck injury during a game against the Carolina Panthers. He was officially released by the Packers in 2012, and formally announced his retirement in 2014. Duke Dawson
Duke Dawson (born October 13, 1995) is an American football cornerback for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Florida. Early years Dawson is from Cross City, Florida, and went to Dixie County High School there. College career Despite speculation that he would forgo his senior season and declare for the 2017 NFL Draft, Dawson later announced that he would return to Florida for his senior year. During his senior season, he defended 13 passes, leading the Gators and tying for third in the SEC. His accomplishments lead him to be selected for the Coaches All-SEC First-team.
