The Division of Isaacs was an Australian Electoral Division in the state of Victoria. It was located in the inner southern suburbs of Melbourne. It included the suburbs of St Kilda, Ripponlea and part of Caulfield. The Division was named after Sir Isaac Isaacs, former Chief Justice of Australia and the first Australian-born Governor-General of Australia. It was proclaimed at the redistribution of 11 May 1949, and was first contested at the 1949 Federal election. Isaac Isaacs
Sir Isaac Alfred Isaacs (6 August 1855 – 11 February 1948) was an Australian lawyer, politician, and judge who served as the ninth Governor-General of Australia, in office from 1931 to 1936. He had previously served on the High Court of Australia from 1906 to 1931, including as Chief Justice from 1930. Isaacs was born in Melbourne and grew up in Yackandandah and Beechworth (in country Victoria). He began working as a schoolteacher at the age of 15, and later moved to Melbourne to work as a clerk and studied law part-time at the University of Melbourne. Isaacs was admitted to the bar in 1880, and soon became one of Melbourne's best-known barristers. He was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1892, and subsequently served as Solicitor-General under James Patterson, and Attorney-General under George Turner and Alexander Peacock. William Haworth
Sir William Crawford Haworth (15 April 1905 – 1 December 1984) was an Australian politician. Born in Melbourne, he was educated at state schools before attending the University of Melbourne and the Victorian College of Pharmacy. He became a pharmaceutical chemist, and served in the military 1940–44. In 1937, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the United Australia Party member for Albert Park; he was the Victorian Minister for Health and Housing in 1945. The electoral district of Albert Park is one of the electoral districts of Victoria, Australia, for the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It covers an area of in inner suburban Melbourne, and includes the suburbs of Albert Park, Middle Park, Port Melbourne, St Kilda West, Southbank, South Melbourne, South Wharf, and parts of St Kilda. 1969 Australian Federal Election
The 1969 Australian federal election was held in Australia on 25 October 1969. The incumbent Liberal–Country coalition government, led by Prime Minister John Gorton, won the election with a severely diminished majority over the opposition Labor Party, led by Gough Whitlam despite losing the two party popular vote. Both major parties had changed their leaders in the run-up to the election, the first time this had occurred since 1946. This was the first and only time that a Federal Government won a ninth consecutive term in office.
