Division No. 18, Manitoba
Census Division No. 18 (North Interlake) is a census division located within the Interlake Region of the province of Manitoba, Canada. Unlike in some other provinces, census divisions do not reflect the organization of local government in Manitoba. These areas exist solely for the purposes of statistical analysis and presentation; they have no government of their own. The economy of the region is based on agriculture, livestock and manufacturing. The population of the area as of the 2006 census was 23,861. The division contains all of the south basin of Lake Manitoba, and borders the west shore of the north basin (which is part of Division No. 19). It also contains Hecla-Grindstone Provincial Park at its northeast corner. Also included in the division are the main reserves of the Lake Manitoba First Nation (Dog Creek 46), the Little Saskatchewan First Nation, and the Pinaymootang First Nation (Fairford 50). Arborg is a town located 103 kilometres north of Winnipeg, at the junction of Manitoba Highways 7 and 68, in the Interlake Region of Manitoba, Canada. The town is surrounded by the Municipality of Bifrost - Riverton and has a population of 1,222 as of the Canada 2016 Census. History The picturesque setting along the Icelandic River was first settled in the late 19th century. Its first postal address was Ardal (Icelandic ''Árdalur'', meaning "River Valley"), but in 1910 when the Canadian Pacific Railway reached the settlement, the name was changed to Arborg (''Árborg'', meaning "River Town"). It was incorporated as a Local Government District (LGD) on 1 January 1945, and became a Rural Municipality in 1997. The Rural Municipality of Gimli is a rural municipality located in the Interlake Region of south-central Manitoba, Canada, on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg. It is about north of the provincial capital Winnipeg. The rural municipality's population in the 2016 Canadian Census was 6,181, making it the 12th largest rural municipality by population. The RM of Gimli has an area of , making it the sixth smallest rural municipality by area. The unincorporated community of Gimli and the surrounding district were once an Icelandic ethnic block settlement, and the area, known as ''New Iceland'', is home to the largest concentration of people of Icelandic ancestry outside Iceland. The Municipality of Bifrost – Riverton is a rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. History The municipality was incorporated on January 1, 2015 via the amalgamation of the RM of Bifrost and the Village of Riverton. It was formed as a requirement of ''The Municipal Amalgamations Act'', which required that municipalities with a population less than 1,000 amalgamate with one or more neighbouring municipalities by 2015. The Government of Manitoba initiated these amalgamations in order for municipalities to meet the 1997 minimum population requirement of 1,000 to incorporate a municipality. The amalgamation did not include Town of Arborg which is surrounded by Bifrost – Riverton. Rural Municipality Of Armstrong
Armstrong is a rural municipality in the province of Manitoba in Western Canada. It lies in the southern area of the Interlake and was named after James William Armstrong, a Manitoba politician. History The surrounding area was settled by immigrants from western Ukraine at the start of the 20th century. Amongst the original settlers were Michael Pomaransky and Stefan Humeny who settled section 14-19-2E, approximately ten miles west of the community of Gimli. A sizeable community developed as these settlers were joined in the year 1900 by other individuals from the village of Kopychentsi, Ukraine. Riverton, Manitoba
Riverton is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Bifrost – Riverton within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held village status prior to January 1, 2015. It is located approximately 110 kilometres north of Winnipeg. The CPR's train conductor is reputed to have named the community. Riverton is a descriptive which replaced the earlier name, Icelandic River. Icelandic River was named in 1875 by an Icelandic expedition as a prelude to Riverton. Originally known as White River, it appears on Arrowsmith's map of 1821, and as White Mud on Palliser's map of 1865. The main economy is fishing. The Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation operates a fish-packing factory on the banks of the Icelandic River, which passes through the centre of Riverton. Gimli, Manitoba
Gimli is an unincorporated community in the Rural Municipality of Gimli on the west side of Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. The community's first European settlers were Icelanders who were part of the New Iceland settlement in Manitoba. The community maintains a strong connection to Iceland and Icelandic culture today, including the annual Icelandic Festival. It was incorporated as a village on March 6, 1908, and held List of towns in Manitoba, town status between December 31, 1946, and January 1, 2003, when it amalgamated with the RM of Gimli.
