Census Divisions Of Canada
The census geographic units of Canada are the census subdivisions defined and used by Canada's federal government statistics bureau Statistics Canada to conduct the country's quinquennial census. These areas exist solely for the purposes of statistical analysis and presentation; they have no government of their own. They exist on four levels: the top-level (first-level) divisions are Canada's provinces and territories; these are divided into second-level census divisions, which in turn are divided into third-level census subdivisions (often corresponding to municipalities) and fourth-level dissemination areas. Rosthern, Saskatchewan
Rosthern is a town at the juncture of Highway 11 and Highway 312 in the central area of Saskatchewan, Canada. It is located roughly halfway between the cities of Prince Albert and Saskatoon. History Mennonite settlers, led by Gerhard Ens, began arriving in the area around 1890, with the establishment of the Qu’Appelle, Long Lake & Saskatchewan Railway to Prince Albert. The post office was established in 1893, and by 1898 the community achieved village status. In 1903, Rosthern was incorporated as a town. There are several apocryphal versions of the story about how the town got its name. One is that in the late 1880s when the railway ran through from Regina to Prince Albert a man by the name of Ross drowned in the creek that flows through the town. ''Terne'' is old English for tarn meaning a pool, and the name stuck. Lake Lenore, Saskatchewan
Lake Lenore ( 2016 population: ) is a village in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan within the Rural Municipality of St. Peter No. 369 and Census Division No. 15. The village is located northeast of the city of Saskatoon. To the north of the village is Lenore Lake, which is designated as a migratory bird sanctuary, an Important Bird Area (IBA) of Canada, and has a National Wildlife Area on Raven Island. Services in Lake Lenore include a school, Co-op Grocery and Agro Service Station, a Credit Union, and Public Library. History The first home built in Lake Lenore was built by Bernard Gerwing and he is considered a founder of the community. Later on the community would shift a half a kilometre to be closer to the railroad. Laird ( 2016 population: ) is a village in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan within the Rural Municipality of Laird No. 404 and Census Division No. 15. Laird is located in the Saskatchewan River Valley. Hepburn, Saskatchewan
Hepburn is a town in Saskatchewan, Canada, approximately 45 kilometres north of Saskatoon. History Hepburn was settled in the early 20th century as a railroad station. Connection made the community grow overnight and many people moved to the area. Before the 1930s the population of Hepburn had reached over 800 people. In the 1930s, the area was affected by both the great depression and a huge drought affecting most of Western Canada. Many of Hepburn's residents and farmers left the area. By the end of the decade, the population was less than 300. In the 1940s, the community sent over 60 men to serve in World War II. After the war, Hepburn started to grow, and new homes were built. In 1989, the province shut down the railroad line, stranding three grain elevators. Like most Saskatchewan grain elevators, two were torn down but one remained, being converted into a museum about the history of Hepburn and of Saskatchewan. Englefeld, Saskatchewan
Englefeld ( 2016 population: ) is a village in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan within the Rural Municipality of St. Peter No. 369 and Census Division No. 15. The village is located 32 kilometres east of the City of Humboldt on Highway 5. History The community was named for Peter Engel, an abbot of Saint John's Abbey, located in Collegeville, Minnesota. It is not known why Engel's name was spelled differently in the village's name. The surrounding area was settled by German Catholic immigrants in 1902-1903 who arrived by train at Rosthern. From there travelled 125 miles by horse to the area around Englefeld. Englefeld was one of several communities within the tract known as St. Peter's Colony. By 1904, the Canadian Northern Railway had made its way through the region, as did the telegraph with the telephone eventually arriving in 1916. Beatty, Saskatchewan
Beatty ( 2016 population: ) is a village in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan within the Rural Municipality of Flett's Springs No. 429 and Census Division No. 15. The village is located approximately 13 km (8 mi) northwest of the City of Melfort. It is at the junction of Highway 3 and Highway 368. In 1925, Beatty was a Canadian National Railways (CNR) rail station on the Swan River - Prince Albert branch line. The area surrounding Beatty is predominantly farmland and the main source of employment is agriculture. History Beatty was named in 1904, after (and by) Reginald Beatty, an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company and the first settler in the Melfort district. Beatty post office was established in 1908 in the federal electoral district of Rosthern. Beatty incorporated as a village on March 31, 1921. Alvena (Canada 2016 Census, 2016 population: ) is a village in the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Saskatchewan within the Rural Municipality of Fish Creek No. 402 and Division No. 15, Saskatchewan, Census Division No. 15. It is approximately 60 km northeast of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Saskatoon. History Many early settlers to Alvena were of Ukrainian descent. Many were peasant serf farmers in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Others were from Poland and they erected Roman Catholic Churches in the area. Earlier settlers along the South Saskatchewan River were Métis. Many of these families were involved in the April 24, 1885 Battle of Fish Creek which occurred in Tourond's Coulee, a few miles west of what later became Alvena.
